i bought a reverse osmosis system for my home and i thought it might be an good take one with us when we’re camping since we always seem to run low on drinking water and have to take a trip to nearest town. the pressure tank is a little large but i’m sure i can live without it, it won’t be plumbed into the trailer and i will only turn it on to make water as needed. i have a 45psi 12 volt pump that is enough to run the system. anyone else gone this route? any pro’s/cons?

i’d be using lake and stream water, and if we get rain i’ll use some of my tarps to catch it. i’d probably get more life out of the filters if i used rain water

this is the unit i bought for the house, i’ll likely go with the same for the camper if it’s still available, that way i can use the same filters. i bought it at the canadian tire in ontario

Unless the way they operate has been improved, I'd think you'd need a substantial raw water supply.
The system we used to have at home produced several gallons of waste water for every gallon of usable filtered water.
If I remember correctly, everything runs through the pre-filters before much of it becomes "waste", so the waste water is at least, filtered.
Maybe store it separately for doing dishes, etc.?

thanks for the heads up google search shows they are about 25% efficient, producing 4 gallons of waste water per gallon made. not too big of an issue since we mostly camp at lakes so rita can fish i wonder if there would be an issue with putting the waste water back through the system, i suffer with chronic laziness so the less water i have to carry, the better……

If you are wanting to make drinking water from lake or river water, there are filters that make more sense and don't require constant source of power.

You could recycle your RO waste water but you'll still need power.

RO is best for removing chemicals from water, there are various filters for making water safe to drink biologically.

I use iodine tablets to make lake water safe to drink.

we carry water purification tablets with us as plan B, for emergency use but haven’t had a need to use any of them…..yet

How much water are you needing at once?
I know some people like these. Just a lot less to tote around.

after doing a lot of research i decided to go with a ‘waterdrop’ water filter, far less work and cost than installing an RO system and it’s portable so i can use it with my 5x8, 6x12 and my off road expedition trailer
