Took a long weekend and drove 300 miles from Portland to the Strawberry Campground which is surrounded by the Strawberry Wilderness. This is a very nice campground near John Day in Eastern Oregon. Rated as one of the top 50 tent campgrounds in Oregon by Jeanne Louise Pyle's Best in Tent Camping http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=2-9780897325707-0, with a steep road not recommended for trailers... it was perfect for my Little Guy. Arrived Friday night and hiked to the top of Strawberry Mountain the next day. Hazy views from 9038 feet. I think it was the California fires that created the smoke. Campground is 11 miles south of Prairie City, Oregon.

Thanks for the information. I camp not that far from there often. Next time I'll drive a bit further, and stay a while.

Strawberry Wilderness is considered to be one of Oregon's best kept secrets, from what I hear.

I have to ask what was the Temperatures? The last time that I was in John Day in July the temps were running well over 100.

Temps in John Day were in the low 90's. I tried to pick a weekend that was cooler then normal. The campground is at 5700 feet. Much more comfortable. Scramble to Strawberry Mtn. wasn't bad, but it's at 9000 feet. I may try to get down to the Steens Mtn area and Hart Mtn refuge this fall. Summer can get a little hot.

Surprisingly, it was almost full Friday night. On Saturday a lot of spots were available. It gets used mostly by locals.

There was a nice campground about a mile down the road.
