Off to Haines, AK for Memorial Day

Postby Juneaudave » Mon May 25, 2009 12:39 pm

We had a nice trip for the Memorial Day weekend...it started with only Marcia and I, along with Danny the Wicked Spaniel...but both girls (Linda (22) and Alice (20)) were able to come along!!!! Four adults, two dogs, a tear and a canoe in a Honda Element!!! Here were are boarding the ferry in Juneau...kinda looks like Ma and Pa Kettle heading out with crap lashed to the roof rack in dry bags...I can trully say I understand the phenomina of people walking up to check out the Tear while waiting at the ferry terminal line...

We got to Haines, and the Chilkoot Campground was closed...so off we went through Mud Bay. This area has some really nice hanging glaciers and wide open spaces for the dogs to run. There were a lot of boaters out on the ocean after King Salmon...

Here's is Linda at the camp a Chilkat Campground. We set up a big tent for the girls along with the Tear for us..

And off for canoeing back on Lutak Road...Hit a bit of mud...

This stream has four big salmon runs over the course of the summer and fall...we were about a month early for the first run (and accompanying bears). It was really nice though. The river is an outfall for a lake about a mile or two further up the road....

And Danny the Wicked Spaniel had a ball. Let it be said that he was able to find all sorts of unmentionables to roll in!!!!

And finally...here is the Haines terminal for the way back!!!

Wow!

Sitting atop Shenandoah NP last week, I could only dream of the phenomenal scenery out west.

Can't say I can even imagine Alaska's.

Thanks for posting these photos!

Got more?

Ya know...we're really putting the trailer to alot more use than I thought we would. There must have been some pent up demand for camping around here. It's out every weekend...and alot of the time during the mid work week.

Now where's that car wash soap.....
