Monstero's first off road trip

Took the new tear out for his first off-road boondock trip for just one night. We have a great oasis about 30 miles from our little town in the middle of the desert Think Burning Man a little to the northeast but with no people and trees. Learned we need a little better seals to keep the dust out! Otherwise it was a wonderful one night trip, totally isolated. Even made ice cream! justs us, the birds (Lewis's woodpeckers and belted kingfishers) and the wild burros.

Now that looks like peace and fun to me. Seems the Aussies had lots of trouble with dust. Not sure they ever found a real good cure.

Let me know what your doing to keep the dust out. I need to find a solution for that here in NM too.

yup, I was in your city two years ago and no. NV and N.M. are pretty much interchangeable in terms of high desert and dust. I thought I was home! As for the dust, so far we are trying beefing up the weather strip. I had already put in the little elastic door skirts like on the camp-inn. They didn't keep the dust from coming in, but they did keep it from getting on the matteress/quilt and kind of "trapped" the dust and made it easier to clean up.

Mandy, I made mine a little different. I used the screw-in type snaps to attach it to the trailer rather than the wood "clamp" type thing camp in uses.

Any more you can share on that keen oasis? NorCal isn't that far from NorNev don't you know.
Nothing quite like an oasis in the desert(I love the desert).

It's a big difference, having a tear, isn't it! A one-night trip in a tent probably would not have been worth the effort. Glad you had a good trip.

A couple questions:

What did you make your front rock skirt out of? Is it padded or is it some sort of vinyl?

Can you post or direct us to a pic of the door skirts? I'm having trouble visualizing those.

Where did you get screw-on snaps?

PS. I love the 'extra mile' you went on the curtains. Not many people would bother to do quilt piecing on those. You did a terrific job and it really adds to the over-all ambiance.

...nice looking "oasis" for a quick trip....as far as the dust goes, don't beat yourself up...as folks found out in the 30's, if dust wants in, it is almost impossible to eliminate completely.........

Russ: The place we went is called Porter Springs. It is about 20 miles west of Lovelock. It is pretty much only known by locals and birdwatchers from Reno. I will find more details (being locals I know how to get there but not what the names of the roads are) and PM you.

Sharon: I stole the front rock skirt idea from Doug Hodder, as well as the dust skirts (and he stole the idea from camp inn). You can see them on the camp inn website, although I did modify it. Doug helped me with the details, he was great..thanks again Doug.

I made my front rock skirt from a waterproof awning type material, a quite heavy "duck" kind of fabric. Doug has made several from different fabrics, some padded, others like mine, and he says they seem to work equally well. I bought both the snaps and fabric at a local shop called "mill end" which really is a huge fabric cast off store in Reno that carries upholstery fabric and supplies as well as all other kinds of fabric. You may be able to find them at a regular fabric store or craft store. They can also be ordered of the internet. I didn't bother to look since I knew about this place and have shopped there for years.

I made the dust aprons/skirts from a lighterweight also waterproof tent nylon fabric with a casing in the top and elastic shock cord like in tents across the top.

I will go take some photos of both and post.
