Success on the first try

Postby lrdudley » Fri Apr 19, 2013 8:56 pm

A couple of months ago my sister picked up a 10" Lodge camp DO for me. Today was the first attemp at using it. Nothing fancy, just the chicken and rice recipe from "Camp Dutch Oven Cooking 101" that came with the oven. It was cold, windy and spitting rain here in Indiana today, but the results were well worth the effort. Even my granddaughters liked it, and they're picky.

Nicely done. Dutch Oven cooking is fun and rewarding, especially when it turns out good. What's for dinner tomorrow?

We have had a 12" Lodge dutch oven for maybe 12 to 14 years and just started using it three years ago. I knew it would be a good idea to use but it just never happened. Then my husband's cook off team entered in a DO cook off during the BBQ event and he was hooked. During and after Hurricane Ike we had no to minimal power for 8 days unless we used the generator so we lost a lot of food that we could not keep on ice. I told him if had used the dutch oven earlier we could have eaten like kings. That won't happen again although I'm not willing to have another hurricane to put it to the test. We now have five of various sizes and they all are put to good use, camping or hanging at home. Have fun with that first one because soon you probably will have 1 or 2 more. :)
