Pack a few kabob skewers and insert one of them into the heaviest area of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is done. If not give it a few more minutes. I have been known to grab a very small branch off of a tree and scrape it clean of bark and use it as my indicator in a pinch

I am of course rather new to CI cooking. In some of the pictures, I see what looks like paper lining the DO. What is it? And does this help with clean up? When would you use it and when would you just use the bare pot?

It is parchament. You can buy them precut at camping stores or cut your own. I use them for cakes or for other messy, sticky meals.
