$10 10" W/ Cracked Lid

3 legged crack with parts along the D in LODGE all the way through.
Lower seems to be in top shape save for a bit of surface rust along part of top edge.
What will be the problem running the damaged lid?

Go for it and try it out I used a cracked lid on my first do and it did well. But it was just that a crack and did not leak steam from the pot. Good luck with it and cook with it.

My spider skillet has a stress crack near the handle and it doesn't stop me from using it. In fact it makes a great quality control indicator.

If the gravy leaks out it is too damn thin !


Seriously, it has not gotten any worse and I truely love cooking over the coals with it.

I have hit yard sales and flea markets and scored orphaned lids for just a few $$$. Measure the cracked lid and put your tape measure in your pocket, another will come along meanwhile just keep on cookin'

Now, how about a crack through the bottom of a rounded edged square frying pan? It's not as pronounced as the DO but there none the less.

Wasn't so gung-ho to cook with that one with a crack right over flame despite my fondness for the shape.
Is this a no/no or should I get it down off the fence and clean it up?

The side shot shows the legs to be very substantial and from the rough outside finish it appears to be ancient ( the best in my opinion ) can any of you cast iron geru's identify it from the rather limited photos .

taking it down off the fence as we speak (a bit of surface rust now), scrub, re-season and put it back into service.

I was really lookin forward to using that busted pile of iron before I found the crack and set it out as decoration.

Almost like getting an old friend back with a new start.

Looks like an early Lodge to me.

That is exactly what I thought ! Most of the asian knock off have rather spindley legs. These appear almost quarter size at the pot base and taper down but are still quite substantial.

I just won a pair of corn muffin pans this morning. I am going to try and fabricate my poor mans waffle dogger out of the pair.




Damn a 14" vintage Lodge camp oven starting at $5.00. I may have to rethink this a bit.
