I know that the wood has to dry before I can use it. Actually, I have some stuff cut and in the drying stage but I don't have any maple other than some peices of silver maple and I don't think that stuff is hard enough for handles.

I have a small band mill and I cut different species and try to air dry them. I would like to build a solar kiln because I am convinced a solar kiln will dry wood with more stability than the fast drying that commercial lumber is dried in.

I had the feeling that Maple would be a better choice than either Hickory or Beech but I wondered if Beech might just do the trick. I have some hickory cut and I might try it as soon as I get the moisture down. It wouldn't be bad practice for when I can get some proper maple.

Danny is right. That iron of yours is sure pretty. I hope mine turns out as nice but of course it is pretty plain jane compared to that heart shaped one of yours.

Bet the waffles that come off mine will be just as good though.

That is, If I learn to cook them as well as you.

I measured the handles on my Wagner iron, they are 4" long. The handles Danny did for the Alfred Andresen are 4 1/2" not including the nub that goes in the iron.

Dave, if you have a pressure cooker you could get the moisture down in that Hickory. Another method is to place a heat pad over the wood for 24 hours. Placing a piece of wood for the handles in two sheets of newspaper and microwaving for a minute with 5 minutes rest for several times will get rid of moisture too. Just don't leave it unattended as some have found the wood has caught on fire. I'd wait until the wife goes to the store before trying that one. . I have lots of wood scraps that I've collected over the years that I used for Kevin's handles. Cabinetmakers that turn wood never throw nice looking wood away no matter how small it is. You'll need to start out with at least a 15/16" square blank to make the handles and an inch too long too. Danny

All authenticity aside....I'd think that anyone that receives an item turned by Danny will be ecstatic...He does some incredible work, and for me, I love to show what I received from him to anyone that comes by and mention that it came from a buddy on the tear drop forum. I just wish I had something other than the coiled iron handles I have on my waffle unit! Doug

Those coiled wire type are known as Alaskan handles.
That should mean something to you.

I think I have the load procedure down pat.

Here are some pics of my waffle iron as received. I will take some more pics when I get started with the cleaning. I really would like someone to tell me if the electrolysis will take off the paint?

Found a matched pair with fire rings thought they were too cool to pass up. Now I can make me a big old waffle and fix old what's her name a diet size one !

Anyone have any backgroung on Werle Cast iron. I went looking on the net and could locate nothing. Is it desirable. Looks very old.
