It will be no hardship to check out some thrift/antique stores on the trip. If I don't find them there I'll go online and try to find them from the states I traveled through on Goodwill and Ebay.

In California it is apparently illegal to recycle/reuse license plates. I got a real lecture when I went to a pick and pull junkyard to see what I could come up with. So I decided to poke around on the internet. I scored a whole bundle of them off of Goodwill.com for just a few bucks. The site auctions stuff just like e-bay.

I just see it now. Cops rolling into the Dam Gathering just before dinner. Over the bullhorn - "Ok folks this is a bust. We know you have illegal plates around those ovens. We are going to have to confiscate all the Dutch Ovens and you are all going to jail." And just behind him a line of police with napkins tucked around their necks holding spoons and forks.

Looks like it will work well, excellent idea.

Remember to be careful with heat and galvanized metal. If it gets too hot, the galvanization will make TOXIC smoke.

Hmm...toxic smoke, not good.... ....what if I heat it up really hot a couple of times before I use it ....would that 'burn' the bad stuff away??

It takes quite a bit of heat. You will be okay if you use them for windbreak but keep them 3" - 4" away from the coals, more if the coals are really hot. The first sign of too much heat is a chalky white or yellow residue.

I think you will be ok with the plates. All of mine are aluminum, not galvinized and I have not seen any discoloration since I have been using them.
