Steve...you have my deepest sympathies...I have fought long and hard to avoid the "iron" temptation...propane is my friend(I keep tellin' myself)!!!!

p.s. I actually have a fairly large collection of iron that I cook in regularly...but it is all flat bottomed, designed to use on a stove top, grill or oven......MJ

Jack...

I know ... I know... propane and electric aka Nesco cooking have been mine as well.

Guess, it is the people I been hanging with and camping with that edged
me toward the Iron side. I won't mention any names. Going to a DOG
about 3 weeks ago and then camping the weekend before the 4th of July
brought me face to face with Iron.

Jack... I don't like the paying the shipping but do like the food that seems
to come out of the Iron... so it seems if I can get iront without shipping I
can somehow justify my slipping away into the coma that is representative
of the blackness of seasoning.

Should I be hoping or looking over my back for an intervention about now?

..nope to late for intervention now...just cook up some goodies and enjoy...as much as I like to cook and hangin' with the ironsmiths, I know it is only a matter of time before the will breaks and I too will join the black iron gang.....

Well, Jack...

If you go to Walmart about this time of year the 12" DO = standard tech
is 41.00 plus tax... A very good price for a seasoned pot. No shipping and yur
out da door and into the recipe books that talk 12" aplenty for da beginner.

Jack ... the Iron cooks oh so fine .... and the food sticks to yur spine. 8)

Come ... ... Come on over to the Iron side.
Just don't waste money on shipping.
Get yur deals and you will have yur meals.

Steve,

Sorry about your new addiction. It won't be long before you are driving around in an H2 Hummer so you have enough power to pull all that cast iron.

Those are nice additions to your iron "collection". Although they aren't really made for campfire cooking, those combo cookers are the cat's meow.

Lest anyone think that Steve is a newbie at cooking, this is a treat that he cooked up in a DO for us at Big Bear Lake over the 4th. It was AWESOME.

Your doomed now Steve :( , don't know if there is a cure. I'm going to my annual Woodturning pot luck and wood auction today, Dutch Oven in tow. I have a feeling this strain of the virus will spread around here today. :) Danny

I like my combo unit, the only thing I wish frying pan part has an ash ring so it be easier to put coals on top.

I recieved my first DO for Father's Day...I've cooked in it at least once a week. Even invested in a charcoal chimney. The food that comes out them is fantastic. The first meal I prepared was a roast that I found on this forum. My wife was singing my praises shortly after the first bite! Going camping this coming weekend, can't wait to take it with me.

For deals on Iron, you should keep an eye on amazon.com, many times they have free shipping, sales - mine, all Lodges, were 35% to 50% off & no sales tax to California. Hard to beat that price. I ended up ordering 3, not all the same time. 8" - 2qt. original finish $23.75, 10" 4qt. pre-seasoned finish 34.99, 12" 8qt. (deep) original finish $36.50. These were the total price as there was no shipping or sales tax.
Seemed like pretty good prices to me.
Week to week prices & sales seem to change, so if you're looking for some might be worth keeping an eye out on the web site.
Martha ;)

Steve,
That shipping thing will be a minor glitch that you'll soon accept and won't even flinch.
The shipping on a Maca 22" is 100.00.
What's probably gonna be your biggest bugaboo is the ebay deals...
Wondering when the seller is actually gonna ship the damned thing, tearin' into a package only to find that it's cracked and doing repeated searches for something you're looking for that wasn't listed five minutes ago.
Hey that pic Joanne posted looks awesome!!!
Please put up the recipe for that.
My advice is to let the iron take you on a journey and enjoy the ride...

Dean:

I met a woman at the Mountain DOG down here in Hemet California a few weeks ago that has tons of Meca and stores uM all over her house. She made me smile and think of you when she said she had two big pots under here coffee table in the living room and had to get a special cart to move her Iron around. She also does all her cooking out on her back patio with a big cast iron stove and of course the DO's of Meca.

She is one heck of a source to find the best prices on things. She just knows her iron prices and who sells what for what amount... I guess is the best way to put it.

Anyway... I got the waffle iron figured out as far as temp goes before starting to cook on it now and verified its operation today for breakfast and it works great.
