1 time cooking in a dutch oven

well i got one [dutch oven] but no feet. can some one tell me how hi r the feet on your oven. i think i will just use stand off's. will that work ok?

Like Matt, I use a lid holder to lift up pots that don't have legs. When I have a bunch of leftover charcoal that is still lit, I use it to heat my dishwashing water. I bunch up the charcoal, throw a lid holder over them, then put a pot of water on to heat.

Although it's nice to have legs on your your oven, it's certainly not required to be able to successfully cook with it.

I cut three little sections out of scrap 2" by 2" steel tubing so I can arrange them in a triangle under the oven without legs. They raise it almost exactly the same height as the tripod legs on a lodge camp oven. The pieces are about two inches long.

well i used the dutch oven for chicken. not to bad i gess. how meny times do i season it 1-2-3 ? ps pic in album. thanks

Season it once to start with.

Then it takes several lifetimes (kids, grandkids, greatgrandkids). i.e. seasoning never stops. It just gets better and better. 'bout the only cookware you can say that about :thumbsup: ;) :applause:

dutch oven cooking

Welcome to dutch oven cooking. It can be addicting! I am learning that it is true, anything you can cook in the kitchen you can cook in a dutch oven. I am having great fun and hope you do also. be sure to take pictures of the cooked food. Nice way to record your progress.

You can kinda accelerate the "aging" process by using higher fat content meats early on in the life of cast iron pots and pans. Instead of chicken, cook something like pork butt, or cook a meal with bacon as part of it.

I heard deep fried lard sandwiches were best for a good quick seasoning. 8)
