Well, tomorrow is going to be my first time at the dutch oven!! :R
Im going to attempt a pot roast, slow yet easy!
Any tips on cooking and clean up? whats the best way to clean the Do when done? Dish soap and water? Or shall I just use warm water?
About how many coals? I havent done a coal chart yet, im thinking about just going at it blind with the coals. Well, wish me luck!! :)

I use a plastic scraper from Pampered Chef to get the big stuff out. Then I scrub it with hot water and a brush. If I can, I put it on the stove so that all the water can evaporate off faster.

I wouldnt go blind with the coals. It could burn on the outside and be raw inside. There are numerous sites on the internet. I would do a Google to get an idea

Scott, I'm just getting around to wading through all the posts. How did your pot roast come out? I hope it was great!!

There are a lot of online resources for getting started in Dutch Oven cooking and they can help shorten the learning curve a lot.

Keep those coals hot!

I use a plastic scraper from Pampered Chef to clean out all the stuck on bits from my cast iron that I use in the kitchen, and they work great!! I highly recommend them for getting off the tough stuff.

Why not try out the the Charcoal Calculator in the Cast Iron Section. it really helped us on the first time out! BTW, we use hot water and good scrub brush. I usually add just enough hot water to boil up any crud while the cast iron is still warm
