I bead blasted the chicken fryer today. Masked off the bottom to show just how it can clean up rusty metal. Outside of the pitting from it spending who knows how many years sitting maybe on concrete, it cleaned up really nice. I sure wish I had the top portion for it. It's in the oven seasoning right now. On it's 2nd cook. Doug

That's a beautiful pot. Another good reason to cook with iron instead of Teflon stuff.

There's nothing like a good blastin' to clean up the cast iron! That will look great after the seasoning!

Danny...I just got off the phone with Kevin...He broke out his "bible" of cast iron stuff. I got all the numbers of the hinged lids that will fit, some are domed, some are flat skillet types. There is also a DO with a hinged lid that will fit it. If I could find one, I would have a couple of combinations that would work. Now to just find them.... Doug

I have the same Griswold chicken fryer but without the hammered effect on the handle. It's a favorite. My lid has ears that make a tight seal over the pouring spouts on the sides of the pot.

For those of you who have never seen one of the old chicken fryers, here's a photo. The top skillet has a tab that fits in the slot of the bottom skillet. The two form a hinge.

In this photo, the skillet on the left is a Wagner and the one on the right is a Griswold.


In this photo you can see the tab and slot.


If any of you happen across a hammered skillet with the tab on it, you may want to give Doug a shout. I'm sure he would appreciate it!

I personally would never bead blast or sand blast CI.. IMO it ruins the iron's original finish I prefer electrolysis for rust and a Lye bath for the carbon build up.

You might be right, but if you think about it the original finish has already been compromised by the rust. What difference does it make which method one uses to remove the rust? Electrolysis is also going to leave pits in the surface where the rust has eroded the iron surface. I do have to agree with you about sand blasting iron, it's way too aggressive. I've been glass beading both cast iron and aluminum engine parts for many years, I don't have a problem using the process on cast iron cookware.

I personally supply Kev's glass beader with viewing window glass so I can get my iron blasted for free.
