Dutch Oven in the kitchen oven

I want to try out my Dutch Oven before the big camp and don't have a fire pit. Can I use it in the normal kitchen oven? This seems like a really stupid question, but that's never stopped me before.

you can use it in a real oven, but it will not be the same because you are not using charcoal or wood.

Yup. I tried mine out doing brownies in the oven.
Worked great!

Congratulations on the new Dutch Oven. They are a lot of fun to cook in! Feel free to stop by camp-cook.com and join the cult....errr....club.
Here's two tutorials that should get you started with a minimum of fuss. They are pretty short so it won't take you long to read through them.

If you are just starting out and wanting to cook on the back porch, a metal oil pan works great.
Of course a 14" might be a little big for an oil pan, but a metal trash can lid would work too!

And as I have tossed out before a 12" fits neatly into a 14" Weber Smokey joe Junior as a fire bowl and you have air control with the bowl vents. Leave off he grill lid unless you are cooking REAL slow.

I find a large cake in my cast iron on occasion my wife like to "borrow" them for her oven baking in the house too.

It worked just fine in the 375 oven for 45 minutes. I accidentally used Angel Food instead of white cake, with fresh sliced peaches. The peaches weren't very sweet. The whole thing was still very good. So far, so good...baby steps.

You can also toss a chicken, some potatoes, a few carrots ... maybe a little water .... in the dutch oven and put it in the stove. Yummy!

I use dutch ovens in the oven on a regular basis. They work great. They are especially good at low-and-slow cooking.

There are lots of dutch ovens made for the kitchen. They usually come without the legs and have a different lid designed to be self basting for stews and the like. I have cooked in the kitchen with a dutch oven designed for coals. Just put the legs between the oven rack rails and leave off the top if you are baking something like cornbread.

I have a 10 or 12 that I cut the legs off years ago when I got it new so I could use it in the oven. I cook in it almost every day. It works great on the stove and in the oven the legs don't get stuck. It is my favorite post to cook with at home.

Just lower the shelf and put an old cookie pan under it if it has feet. I found that the feet catch on the shelf and it can be hard to get out of the oven without the pan underneath.

I always pre-cook my ribs for 2hrs in a dutch oven in the kitchen oven, then I put them on the BBQ. Now that is some good eating. Of course the state pan of Utah is the dutch oven...
