First ever Dutch Oven meal a success

Postby CJflyer » Tue Dec 15, 2009 7:40 pm

Well, after spending the last two weeks flying around South America and the Caribbean, I arrived home to the realities of winter. My wife gave me a dutch oven for an early Christmas present and so I decided to defy the cold weather and try my hand at Dutch oven cooking. Despite the 19 degree temp, the Chicken and Rice recipe turned out awesome! I am looking forward to many more tasty meals with this new found culinary process. Its amazing what a few briquettes and a cast iron pot can do! :applause:

Glad to hear you love the Dutch oven. I got one for fathers day last year and love to use it whenever i can!!!
And if you ask me winter is the best time to cook with one, No Sweating!!!! :x

The wife picked it up on Black Friday at the Tractor Supply Store for $30. It measures 12 inches across and I believe it is a 6 quart? It has no markings on it other than a sticker that says made in China and it came with no instructions. She almost bought two but being an off brand she wasn't sure of the quality. After close inspection and use we determined it was well worth the price but of course, they all all sold out now. The lid fits nice, the legs are thick and sturdy, the handles are heavy duty etc. Can't remember the brand as the wife has already used the box to ship off other presents. Thanks for the tutorial at Crawford Nathan! Your part of the inspiration to try this. Hope to see you both again this summer.

You've come over to the Dark Side, CJflyer. Thanks for the pix--that's a nice DO. Ours is a no-namer, too. The lid fits nice and tight. The handles and feet are good and strong. It's served us for more than 25 years and I expect it to go for much longer.

CJ, did you use the Chicken and Rice recipe from the "Cookbook PDF"? I can't wait to print that thing out. I got a DO a few months ago, but haven't fired it up yet. I guess I'm a little apprehensive or something...

I'd like to try something simple yet delicious and this recipe seems to fit the bill.

Gary and I love cooking in our DO's. One Thanksgiving ... we deep fried the turkey and everything else was cooked in DO's .... sweet potatoes ... green bean casserole ... pumpkin pecan cake  Trudy

Oops, I didn't see the response. Keep on practicing, that's what I do! We hope to be in Crawford in the fall - that is such a nice group area.
