Help...what are these? Updated with pictures 4-3-11

I need your help. My wife found these while junking today and sent me these pictures. The pieces that really caught my eye were the 2 long handled waffle/crepe/pancake? irons. They have a real long handle. There were several cast iron bases but we don't know if they belong to these irons. No markings were seen anywhere. Anyone know what they are?

At first I thought it was maybe a pizelle iron, but they are too deep...I'm betting a heart waffle....could be wrong...but an old one. Doug

Doug, there are 2 of them. The large picture show 1 on top of the other, But with the long handles do you think they were just used over a fire without a ring?

PS. got a globe and mantles on the lantern today. It gets fired up next!

I have a business associate who is Scandinavian, and he makes these really thin, crisp pastries that they dust with powdered sugar, and they look kinda like that pattern. :thinking:

That's a pizzelle they're awesome! I think it's a traditional Italian thing, but am sure other Euro types have them with various names. Doug

The Norwegian version is called 'krumkacke.' (sp?) A former boss used to bring them in at Christmas-time. If I recall correctly, they are made with a little two-piece press like a waffle iron. They are delicate, almost paper-thin, crispy. I seem to remember them being curled around a horn-shaped object so they formed a cone.

We have made krumkacke and Fattigman for Christmas. Both are similar and made in a heated iron. The main ingredient is butter, I mean a lot of butter. Then throw in a little flower with a lot of sugar, cook and cover in powder sugar. Eating that lye soaked and then dried cod (Leutefisk) is probably nessecary to counteract all the artery clogging and sugar high eating that keep the Vikings going.

My wife and I are both half Norse and enjoy the old traditions although I cant get past my annual spoonful of the Leutefisk. My wife loves it, says it tastes like lobster. Don't ever believe that one, I like lobster.

Gary, you are a lucky man. My wife wants the real Lobster. But she did go back and pick up the whole pile of iron for me. I have not seen it yet but she sent me a bunch of pictures. So I got both of these "Pizzelle irons" a Griswold,a Wards and a Rey O Noc ( By HSB&Co.) waffle irons with stands. I'll post up some better pics tonight so everyone can see.

Ah! You give me hope! There's IRON somewhere in the Chicago area!

I've been a member on the Camp-cook board for awhile now, and I live in the far, far NW Chicago 'burbs - in McHenry County. I have been looking in the thrift shops and impatiently awaiting the start of garage sale season, hoping to feed my new-found Cast-Iron-itis. I have found NOTHING.

So now I have hope that I might, yet, find some treasures in the midwest!

Great finds! I'd LOVE to have a waffle iron, and I'm especially loking for a fry pan!

They are kinda like mushrooms in the spring..... They are where you find them. I was junk shop slumming with my wife,mom,and sister and we walked into a little unnamed shop and at the front door was a hugh table growning under the weight of hundreds of pieces of cast iron. Old name U.S. iron (and a few chinese pieces) . I came out with a 14" lodge and an ancient 12" skillet with gate mark clearly visible. I really love the OLD OLD stuff.

There is iron all over Chicago! You just have to look down. I do best at estate sales in old neighborhoods. ScouterMom, if you PM me I may be able to help you out. I have several extra pieces. I live in Bartlett so I am close by.

Here is a new picture of the long handle iron. The depth of the these seems much more like a regular waffle iron, not thin and wafer like. Could this just be a travel style waffle iron. Or could it still be a Pizelle. It's still a puzzle to me.

Here are the waffle irons...This one is a Wards on a tall base.

There is also a 9" Griswold on a short base.

I do not need all these waffle Irons. I will be at the Crossroads and Minden Gatherings. If anyone has interest let me know. They can be brought along. All I want is my costs back, I am not looking to profit from the Teardrop group, I just like to see fellow campers get some cool old iron.

Steve that long handle one looks like a waffle iron that mt great aunt had that belonged to my great great grandmother. She stated that before her mom got a wood burning stove she still cooked in the fireplace. I remember her having alot of cast iron stuff that was made with long handles. Hers didn't have the hearts on it but outside looked the same, although that was like 32-34 yrs ago for me.
