Pizza

I have a 14" dutch oven that I bought months ago and I have wondering what in the world I was going to do with it. Today I was at a garage sale and I found a pizza stone. There was a break in the weather today and I have been dying to use some cast iron. I had an old pizza in the freezer that was going to be the guinea pig. I placed a pie tin, upside down in the bottom of the oven. Then I put a coat hanger around the pizza stone and dropped it in on top of the tin. I warmed the oven up then dropped the pizza in. I had to cook it a liitle longer, but it came out well and was a fun project.

you can cook the pizza right in the D.O. I do it every year on my wood stove to save on electric they always come out great.

To avoid the heat in the kitchen during our 90+ heat wave we tossed one on the grill last week. The smokey flavor was a bit different but quite good.

Frank & Jamie from the "Great Lakes Chapter" showed me this past July just how easy it is to make a pizza in the DO.

If you cook straight on the bottom are the pizzas hard to get out of the oven? :D

Yup....but if you use some parchment paper, it will lift right out and you want to get it out anyway, as the heat left in the iron will continue to cook it. Doug

Are you sharing the pizza dough recipe? How many coals and how long to bake? I'm new at DO cooking..in fact, mine won't get here until the end of the week...but then WATCH OUT!!!! I'll be practicing!!!

If you want fresh dough and dont want to make it yourself just stop at any pizza place on your way out of town and buy a couple of raw dough balls. They are cheap, ready to go, and will keep for a couple of days in the ice chest. You can also use cornmeal on the oven bottom to keep the pie from sticking. Thats what they do in the pizza place.

Or just get you a Papa Murphys take and bake. Toss into DO a viola! No body will know

FYI Winco (a Pacific Northwest Grocery chain) sells fresh pizza dough. I thought you might have a secret recipe esp. for the DO. I think Pillsbury also makes some kind of pizza dough.

I saw the recipe in the new T&TTT cookbook and may try that one. I'm working on learning about the DO here at home...I still haven't heard back about the trailer I wanted to buy..he said it was still for sale and sent pictures, but that was it. I even arranged to store it, but haven't heard back.

SO...tent camping for now, and perfecting DO and camp food recipes. I doubt anyone would be impressed my my pre-cooked rice in a ziplock and Dennison's chili on top, with cheese and onions. I love it, but it's too pre-fab for you folks. So I'm experimenting with other stuff...a chicken/rice dish tonight!

But coming soon...pizza!!!
