Been reading up till I fall asleep on tip and tricks for cooking in cast but I am confused about a couple things.
Why is it recommended to scrape your stuck on food with plastic or wood but I see people using metal utensils when cooking??
What should I buy for my camping utensils?

I use hard plastic cooking utensils to protect the seasoning on my cast iron.

Seriously the plastic ones are fine and even the metal are acceptable if you use them with some care. Where the rub is , is when someone trys to help cook or clean up and you find them using the metal ones for a gasket scraper to remove stuck on food ( and unfortunatly , your precious seasoning with it). My theory is , if I have no metal ones they can't use them to do exactly that.
P.S. Goodwill is a great place for serving utensils of all kinds real cheap.

Thanks for the help. (I doubt I will be making my own spoon anytime soon, but it looks like a challenge!)

with price of wood.... You can buy cheap plastic for camping useage toss and rebuy cheaper. Not a very "Green" way though.
just to add.. I like bamboo utensils in the house. And don't put wood utensils in the dishwasher.

I really like your utensils Bob....what type of wood did you use and did you seal them with anything like a mineral oil? I will whittle one while out camping, and have some done in aspen, 1 piece is 14 years old now and I use it all the time. Making up a couple of blanks might be a fun thing to finish off while camping. Thanks for posting the pics....Doug

I tried plastic for the first time on sourdough pancakes on the CI griddle, which is probably over 50 years old...
worked great!!! I asked Mom what Daddy always used and she said 'metal'...I said TDers use wood or plastic, so they can't all be wrong!!
It just makes sense. I'll keep using the plastic or wood from now on!! It doesn't wrinkle the pancakes one bit!!!
I'm convinced!!!

I have a co worker that has a wood mizer portable ban saw and he slabs off test slivers to be sure all the adjustments are within tolerances. Well he brought me in a test sample about 3/16" thick. It sat in my office for 2-3 months with minimal twisting or cupping so I decided to take it home for something??
Well I was working on my satellite dish dutch oven stand so why not.....
I simply traced the plastic utensils in the pic and took the blank outside and jig sawed them out. All of them took less than 10 minutes.
The wood was from a hard maple and after sawing I sanded them a bit but not to furniture quality. I then filled a cake pan with cooking oil and let them soak 24 hours. Took them out washed them with soap and water and sprayed them with a light coating of pam cooking spray.
My favorite is the angle nosed spatuala.
