Memorial Day weekend...

Postby doug hodder » Mon May 31, 2010 5:45 pm

Rich/ Penny and I went up camping at Ice House....elev. 5500' but only 30 miles from my house this weekend. I didn't figure that the snow level came down that low on Thurs. night. We were plowing snow on the axles of the tears on the way in...and had to shovel off the camping pad. This was taken later in the day, fortunately it melted quickly. Got down to 21 on Fri. night...the rest of the time...had great weather and got a little sun burned.

Randy and Debbie from Nevada were also at the same campground and had their families up as well. They got there a day earlier and rode out the majority of the storm on the way up and on Thurs. night. I'm sure they have some pics to share.

Lots of DO cooking, pizza, Mt. man breakfast with a scratch built mole sauce, evildoers (abelskivers) chocolate chip and blueberry, couple of cakes, and Rich cooked a wonderful schnitzel for dinner 1 night. The highlight was a new "treat" that we were working on mastering...it requires a piece of equipment, that hasn't been posted on the forum anywhere yet....but will surely be a major hit, will post in cast iron. They were great!!!!!

Rich and Penny's friend Dennis also came up and "soft sided" it. A potential new tear convert. Doug

With all this eating, I still lost 3 pounds. How can that be when my stretchy pants didn't feel stretchy enough????

A "few" inches of snow...? We don't let any old stinkin' snow stop us!

A great time was had by all. Will post picks of the 6" of snow on my tear soon! Dicey going in, waking up to at least 6" snow everywhere, but it was pretty much gone by the next day. Amazing! An amazing place too. Thanks to Doug for recommending! Had a great time with the family, esp. the granddaughter. Doug, the crumb cake was delicious! Hope you will share the recipe!

Randy and Debbie....glad you enjoyed it...it's really a nice area, especially when there is snow down to lake level and it's so quiet. Thanks for the apple cake that you shared with us....the pan was soon emptied and we turned in fairly early Sun night. Nice to meet all the kids and the grand daughter. Hope to camp with you all again soon maybe up at the Redwoods babies permitting of course! Doug

I had a very similar weekend.

I traveled zero miles from home, and the temperatures got down to a frigid 71 degrees at night. But, I thawed out during the day with the 97 degree high temperatures. I would have plowed snow with my axles, except that my TD didn't go anywhere and there was no snow.

I grilled steak and veggie kabobs -- no dutch ovens. Dessert was fresh strawberries.

So, snoop doug, it looks like we roll the same.

Ah, so that's what happened to the six inches of rain that fell on us at Spring Fling; It moved south and turned to snow. Looks like a great time.

How common is it to have snow there at this time of year?

Somehow the end of May and snow in California isn't what I'd expect, but then I'm not that knowledgeable about Nor Cal.

Looks like everyone had a good time and the food looks yummy!
