Actually, the most impressive trees I've ever stood next to are at Great Basin NP and in the White mountains east of Bishop. 4700+ years makes the 2000 years of some redwoods seem young. But still, there is a feeling when alone in a grove of large redwoods that is akin to little else on earth, and I got to feel that for a few moments for the second time in my life driving in from the east to the last IRG.

Was doing a little planning for IRG tonight and thought I would let the newbies to IRG know what the entrance to the Pamplin Grove campground on Hwy 36 looks like. It can be pretty hard to see.

Very helpful, thanks! I was looking at photos from previous IRGs and it looked Joanie (or somebody) had made a large sign, so I was counting on that, but, of course, I have no idea where that sign was actually located. Now I know what to watch for, just in case!

Remember only come in from the west when turning into the road to IRG, do not try and turn into the road form the east. very tight turn and lots of traffic

Joanie has always had some entrance identification up for all the IRG's, I'm sure this time will be no exception.

wow, need to put this on my bucket list.

some day little Ellie and ET will make the trip. 8)

Been thru here a few times in rental cars, as my youngest daughter and her family live right up the 101 in the first town in Oregon. Flying out this fall to visit.

Wow, that looks more like a cave entrance than a campground. It's going to take this desert rat a bit to get used to the big trees. Yep I am thinking about 30 seconds or so, at least. 8)

Like Doug said, there will probably be a sign for IRG and some ballons or something. That is what was there last time, but even with that I drove by the entrance a few times at the last IRG. I do like how the campgroud is hidden, sort of like a secret garden.

this leads me to a question. If you are on a single lane and you come across another rig, who backs up? Is there "accepted" etiquette?

If you are close to the gate AND ENTERING THE GROVE, backing up can be dangerous as it puts you back on to the highway. There are not many turnouts to pull in to let people pass-- come right off the highway-- so use caution when entering/exiting. GO SLOW!!

According to the California Driver Handbook:
On a One Lane Mountain Road
When two vehicles meet on a steep road where neither can pass, the vehicle facing downhill must back up until the vehicle going uphill can pass. (The driver going downhill has the greater amount of control when backing.)

I'm going to try to stay off one lane mountain roads without pull-off areas. :frightened:

The entrance will be marked, but for the new people, it can be a challenge to see. If you miss it headed east, continue up the road and then turn in at Swimmers Delight. Pull in there and turn around, then head back, and pull past the campground entrance, like down to the vacant store and then turn around and head back. The only reason I mention this is that there can be a lot of traffic on that road at times...and the fully loaded logging trucks are blowin' and goin'... the angle for the entrance is at a goofy angle making a turn off the highway headed west maybe tough if pulling a trailer. Don't get caught trying to pull a turn on the road coming from the east into the campground in traffic. You'll all figure it out when you get there. Doug
