oh no, you did not sound snooty at all! the first time i read your reply i laughed. then after your second post (the one above) i had to reread your post. hehehe still did not find it snooty.

thanks ladies. we are back from our laborday weekend camping. had a great time. and now, between my hubby and myself, we don't know what we want to do. rofl

i do have a question: when you get sites at campgrounds, what section do you get? tent sections or rv sections?

i prefer the tent sections, so are tears allowed in them?

Hi all,

Early on I considered building mine out of metal but decided against it. I tried to figure out how I would get the sides and all the exterior moulding attached to the metal framework, then decided that wood would be an easier choice.

That said, there have been quite a few tears made out of metal and they turned out great. I think that metal would require you to think through the design a bit more since you just can't just drive a screw into the wall to hold up a shelf you decide to add.

Living in the desert southwest was the other reason I chose wood since it's sooo hot here. Even with insulation it would be hot for me.

Good luck on your build!

ladies...shhh...I'm afraid that if I say it too loud, something will happen and get in the way, BUT...next week is the inaugural rally of the NE chapter of Tin Can Tourists, at a state park that's only an hour and a few minutes from me. They're going to have some group events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and since it's after Labor Day and the park has over 450 sites, I know that there will be walk-up sites available (they only reserved one out of the six loops for the rally).

Sooo...since next week is a non-chemo week, I'm going to try to at least take a daytrip down...and if I can manage it, take the Sunspot down on Friday, and stay over for the Rally and judging on Saturday.

I'd just like to camp in her at least one night when I'm not camping in my driveway...so if I'm strong enough...well, fingers crossed!

oh, yes, pics are definitely on the agenda, even if I only daytrip. The group is all kinds of vintage trailers--including tears. I'm really looking forward to seeing them...and the guy who organized the chapter does restoration work on older trailers, so I'm hoping to check out his work and maybe get some pointers about my water damage.

And maybe just have some fun on a simple camping day or two. ;)

Already found out that my high-maintenance family has an event on tap for Saturday the 14th for which I'll have to put in an appearance...my sister-in-law's having a 90th birthday party for her aunt. Aunt has dementia and many disabilities, is wheelchair-bound and lives in a nursing home, but SIL still tries to bring her home every holiday and on occasions like this. But the party is in the late afternoon, so I can come home from camping about 2 p.m., clean up and still make it. ;)

Fingers still crossed...

'Kay Ladies...'bout time I introduce myself here...though I have been "checking in" for awhile. My husband Leo and I have been bit by the "teardrop bug" big time and have started a GenBen build. We stopped in at IRG and met Shelley, which convinced us "if she can do it, we can!!" Thanks for the inspiration Shelley!

We're building with wood...cos we don't know any better! but we like it so far..we plan an aluminium top painted to match the tow vehicle.

Welcome Cathy and hubby ...... I built mine too, so rest assured... you two can do it! You'll learn alot in the process!

There's a lot of "Chik Built" teardrops, so much that this thread was started and ... someone was going to do a sticker with the "Chik Built" logo for us all to put on our campers.... hmmmm?

The weather has cooled down considerably here in central Oklahoma , so I need to get out today and do a couple of other things in the yard but maybe work on the Jewel Box some too .... gotta get motivated!!!

well--not in the path of the hurricane, but definitely in the path of a weathermaker front that's brought nothing but driving rain for most of the last 48 hours.

Normally, a little rain wouldn't stop me from camping...but life on chemo isn't normal, and I was already pushing my luck going camping and not resting up for my first week back. So I DID go to the Tin Can Tourists rally (my very first one), but I didn't go to camp or even take the trailer. Chemo brain has kicked in and I could just tell taking the trailer wouldn't have been my brightest idea.

However--I did get to see a lot of cool vintange travel trailers. There was one teardrop there, a Yoder Toter, and I talked with the guy for awhile. Other tears had been there but left after a day because of the lousy weather. There was also a trailer there that was the candidate for 'most creative reuse of another vehicle' -- a repurposed postal delivery van. A number of Shastas and Scottys, and of course a lot fo Airstreams of various vintages. But the coolest camper was a tiny trailer manufactured by Mustard of Sweden, called a 'Yvonne.' It was from 1960, and the guy who owned it was only its second owner. Almost all of it was original. Kind of like Steve's Li'l Diner, it had two parallel benches and a table, but no back galley. There was a semi-indoor galley (wall mounted water cannister, sink, counter). But the coolest part was that it had this little section that looked like a turret and raised up about 10 inches to give about 1/3 of the camper about 6 foot of headroom. All original paint and awnings.

I know, PICS. Working on it--I have to load the pics up in Picassa and then edit them so they fit in my album.

But it was a fun day (if kinda wet)--and I did see a lot of cool trailers and meet some intersting people.

And most of all, I'm warm and dry. Heads up and hang on to everyone near the storm center.
