I responded to an ad in free cycle today for a 5 x 30 foot trailer. Owner claimed it was derelict with 2 flat tires but in it's previous life it was used to house and move a glider. It sounded like a good foundation for yet another project, my "green machine".

A self contained solar collection system with rain water colletion and possible wind electric generation.

Now I just have to figure out how to make it look like a train car

A couple of more of those finds and you will have the necessary 750 sq ft.

Well I guess it's mine........

[First e mail to freecycle]

I am looking for a platform to build a semi mobile solar collection unit. It will incorporate a solar furnace, solar cells for electrical generation, and a solar hot water heating system. As with most folks I am doing this on the cheap and would love to have this frame as a foundation for this project. I can be reached at 765-538-2580 or this e mail. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Bob Henry

Bob,

As this is being donated by the Imagination Station, Lafayette's own hands-on science center for kids, would you be willing to bring your finished mobile collection unit down to us for a demonstration on a Saturday afternoon? We like to have various demonstrations throughout the year and this would be a cool one as we don't currently have anything on solar energy. If you could do this, you are welcome to have the trailer.

Thanks,
Brian

[My final e mail]

Thank you thank you thank you !

I am attempting to work with the new Frankfort campus of Ivy Tech and turn this into a mobile laboratory of solar wind and rain water harvesting. I currently have an 8 x 20 tiny house that will be moved to a property on 28 West in Frankfort. This will be a support building. Here is a bit of my idea. Please provide me with the location and a convenient time and I will pick up the unit.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you, Bob Henry

GOD HOW I LOVE FREE !!!!!

That'll be easy enough to bring the completed project to show them.

Congrats, Bob. Good things come to those who deserve it.

I know you are going to use it for something else but seriously that could be the longest teardrop ever.

Well , with the aid of a couple decent tires I had laying around the monster made it to my storage building.

Image

Looking in the rear view mirror it looked like I was towing an air craft carrier

Image

see we did arrive. I took a direct route to avoid any busy intersections as the rear tail swing on a corner took at least 2 lanes.

Image

The frame and tongue are very well made. I crawled under after I got it to the lockup and the 2" square tube frame extends the whole 30 feet. I even liked the little swing down prop foot.

Image

The plywood deck was a bit weathered. :frightened: You can see the aluminum tube support members and the aluminum skin. It is really very very well made.

You are 100% correct. It housed and transported a glider. The saddle cradels were still inside the unit.
