Alex. These lanterns are vety effected by temp. Mine is a monster without glass.

Yes, without the glass, or even one panel out they are hopeless.

I do not know. My 58 Coleman 252 has a globe marked US. No sign there was ever guides for the planes on the frame and it was in mighty fine condition when I got it. Probably only burned a few times. That has been corrected. My later 252s all have the quads in them. On one I replaced 2 of them with aluminum for a poor mans reflector. Does work to good at reflecting light as they are not polished but the lantern burns with no problem.

Help Me??!! Re: Military 252

Hi can anyone tell me what the tools are used for on the 252? One is to remove the generator nut...

I have a really sweet one that has very low miles on her...but a dickens to fire up. :?

The inside of the genrerator has a wick in it? Do I need a new generator?

The fount is is holding pressure, gasket is good, leather is oiled and pump is smooth. :thinking:

Take generator off and it is gettin fuel into the cage. :thumbsup:

Do I need a new Generator or is there something else I am missing or need to look at? :thinking:

Shady, Your right it sounds like the generator could be bad. Although military lanterns do have a reputation of being hard to light and run loud. Is it a straight gererator or the one with the circle in the middle? I think (BUT I could be wrong) that the wick might be stock.

it is the question mark generator. 1952. the inside of the generator has a wick inside it?? Does that need to be primed?

Do you know what the tip cleaner is used for??

I do know that once the wick is out it is nearly impossible to replace. I haven't been lucky enought to find a military lantern at a price that I can afford. I would try to heat up the generator with a torch or lighter to get the fuel vaporized so it will not flood and turn into a fireball. Don't have a clue what the tip cleaner or other tools are for. Hopefully someone else will come along that knows more about your lantern.

If you have the tools that was sent with the 252s there is a little tip cleaner in there. I unscrew the jet off the generator and clean from the inside out. Try that and see.

Another thing about the 252 that people forget....it's a low pressure lantern...don't put a whole ton of pumps into it before you fire it up...Doug

Gotcha...how many pumps would be the norm ...10? 15? Going to clean the nozzle and prime the generator and give it a go.

i do 10 pumps . open the valve till fuel sputters our , then close valve . then light match and open valve 1/2 turn .
watch out for big flame :shock: . then close valve again .
when mantle is burning good , about 30 sec , i open valve again
later add 10-15 pumps , but watch for flareups
i do light it by removing one side of glass .
this seems to be how my smp is best started :applause:

I got a wrench and the tip cleaner and went to town on the 252. Put in a new mantle!! :D

Now she roars and put of a nice lite!! :twisted:
