Garage Sale lanterns

Postby JayM » Sat Oct 24, 2009 1:20 pm

I found these 2 lanterns today at a garage sale. One is a 220B and the other is a military lantern marked 1958. The military lantern is in pretty rough shape. It's missing the cap for the spare parts compartment and has some rust, but still has fuel and was still holding pressure when I got it.
The 220B is in much better shape. It has a 7 on the left and a 0 on the right for the date stamp, so does that mean October 1937?

I paid $25 for both lanterns and a new in-the-box reflector for Coleman lanterns.

The lady said that her now deceased husband had collected lanterns and stoves. There was another newer lantern but I only had enough cash for these 2. She also had a red metal Coleman cooler in good shape but it wasn't for sale. She said there were some stoves and other lanterns but they had already been sold.

It does look good. It's stamped 220B on the bottom, but after looking around in the internet at some of the Coleman sites, I'm thinking it's really a 228B. I did find a comment on one site that indicated that the 228's were all stamped 220.

Funny, I just looked on six of my nickel big hats and none have the 220b stamp on the bottom?? Most of the ones I have were made in the late 1940's or dated 1950 . Some of mine do have the threaded plunger cap like yours also..

You 220B has a July 1940 birthdate. Numbers were used for years and months. It could be that someone swapped some parts around like the ventilator and frame. The frame rest and frame both appear to have been repainted so I'd imagine that it's been apart recently. It's possible that the old hat was beat. Nice finds! Doug
