Using Coleman Stuff

Postby len19070 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 1:26 pm

Every year for about the last 10 I have taken my Son's Soccer Team on a very Rustic Camping trip to an old Summer Camp my Dad used to own back in the 50's.

The Property was sold with the stipulation that if My Brother or I ever want to camp there we can.

There is Nothing there as far as facilities. With the exception of an old Pavilion my Dad built in about 1955.

No water, electricity, bathrooms...Nothing...Its Perfect.

And a fantastic fishing lake that I started Stocking in about 1960 for a Merritt Badge. The fish have really taken to the place.

The Boys are all Men now and the Soccer Team disbanded. the conversations have switched from "finding icky things to scare girls with to Who would like to date Who.

But they still Bug me all year about going up to the Old "Hum" Camp.

We call it the "Hum Camp" because when some of the young campers got home sick they would say in a very sniveling, sobbing voice... I wanna go "Hum".

The real Camp name is Camp Wm. Penn.

Though this is not my normal mode of camping, We camp a lot like my Dad, Brother and a few cousins and I did back in the 50's.

I never realized it but I still use a lot of the original equipment as well.

Some of it 50+ years old.

Which made me think " I own a lot of OLD Coleman Camping Gear that I still use"

Its funny, I don't really think of it as Vintage...Just my Gear.

I use
2 #228's for main lighting,
2 #413F stoves for cooking,
a single burner 50? for Coffee, a Coleman Coffee Pot.
2 Coleman tables
Coleman Chairs
3 very early Coleman coolers
A few Coleman Cots (I'm older now)

New Stuff;

2 Coleman Porta Potty's labeled Bloomsburg and Penn State.
Coleman serving spoons and spatulas.

Not to mention all the Coleman flashlights and other gadgets.

We used to use a Coleman propane grill but have now opted for cooking some things over the fire.

That's a Lot of Coleman Stuff.

It just made me think, what an intricate part of camping Coleman is.

What Vintage Coleman Stuff do you still consider Current Gear?

Happy Trails

Ya' mean vintage is "old" - I just think of it as really cool stuff - I take at least two Coleman lanterns with me when I go out - and they are not the same two each time ( I rotate em") 8)

We like to rotate our white gas lanterns every camping trip. Usually take the 502 one lunger and the 425E stove. Also use the Coleman drip coffee maker, it's slow but brews a good cup of coffee. Also have a battery operated alarm clock/clock/light that we use while boondocking. I am not impressed by any coleman propane products they make now a days. Bought some coleman matches in collector tins last year. Threw away the matches and refilled tins with good 'ole farmer matches. Matches sucked!
Almost forgot about the fold down oven. That also works good on the stove.

I've had a couple scary moments with the 37 year old propane stove in the Compact Jr and am seriously considering tossing it on the rebuild and having the extra counter space. I'll begin looking for a decent white gas stove soon. I've already done in the propane lantern as those green bottles are just getting too expensive.

I think a 12" floor tile, a steel bucket full of heated rocks will suffice for heat when needed. I'll be adding 1/2" of foam insulation to the walls and ceilings.

I totally agree Ageless. Our propane stove developed a leak one day while in use. I think an "O-ring" in the valve must have went south. Recycling all those little green bottles are a pain, not to mention the fact that when cold outside the valves on them have a habit of sticking and good bye whole can of propane. :x The white gas stoves are going for $5 on up at garage sales in these parts. They are also easy to take apart and clean or fix if necessary. I usually wait for white gas to go on sale and have a few gallons on hand.
