242 problems...

Postby Dean in Eureka, CA » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:43 pm

I finally had a chance to fire up my 242 this weekend at Sam Brown Campground.
I'm seeing two issues I need to deal with.
When I pressurize the fount, I have to keep my thumb over the tiny hole and close the pump to keep pressure in the tank. If I take my thumb off of the hole on the pump before closing the pump valve... All the pressure just bleeds right out.
Another problem I noticed was when I went to shut it down...
It appears that the main valve won't completely close.
When I try to shut the lantern down, it will keep burning, but will pulsate very slowly. It's like the flame starts to go out, but just before it does, it's like it gets just a little blast of fuel and starts the shut down procedure all over and that cycle will just keep repeting itself.

Let me guess... I need a new back pressure valve and parts to rebuild the main valve, right?

Dean it sounds like the little ball thingy in your check valve is stuck. Most check valves can be salvaged if you can get it out and soak it in carb cleaner. Anyone in your area that might have a check valve removal tool? Takes less than a minute to remove with the right tool. Will the lantern shut down after a minute or two? I have one that takes a few minutes but eventually will go out. Sounds like you might need a new graphite packing, or it is possible that the F & A spring is getting weak and is letting fuel get through when the valve is closed.

I would tear it down and do a complete cleaning. The pump issue is the check valve. Try pulling the pump an putting some PB Blaster in it & let it soak. It may free it up. You can pull the the valve assembly and spray some carb cleaner in the valve to rinse out any crud. Why you have it out also check the valve seat for wear.

I believe that the lantern is a one mantle 242? If so I agree a FFR (Full Frank Restoration) is in order. http://www.oldcolemanparts.com/resources/tech/re_1lant.cfm

Kevin....bring it down, and I'll take a beater lantern, brush paint it with some leftover paint, drill a hole in the tank and wire it up with a light bulb that flickers. We'll tell him that's the fix! ;) Doug

See - this is what happens when you come to a thread too late - the good posts are already taken! Dean - don't listen to those two - just send it to me and I'll make sure it gets taken care of ( it might be slightly different in color and model when you get it back)
