Paint Question

Postby Woodbutcher » Tue Aug 17, 2010 12:40 pm

I am going to tear apart a 220 lantern. It has some rust around the bottom edge as well as paint peeling on the top of the font. Is there a ready made spray paint that matches the Coleman green? What have you guys used to keep it looking original?

Thanks,
Steve

Krylon Hunter Green should be close. I have also used a Rustoleum green. I would just take the vent or fount with you to the store and find a close match.

tip (and if your spouse will let you): since you are tearing the whole thing down AND after you have descaled the tank AND pulled the pump assembly (the check valve is OK to leave in) AND made sure no more fuel is left in the tank - Finally finished with the precautions - paint the tank and let sit for a few moments, then place in an oven set at 170* - bake for about ten minutes - then let cool. When the paint and the fount are cool to the touch - it's pretty well fuel proof if you spill any out while filling the fount. It has worked well for me. BYW - leave the cap on loosely so any pressure build up can escape - I usually leave the valve assembly out so that a vent hole is left at the top

I think the oil based rustoleum gives you a better gloss than the krylon. Doug

Thanks guys, this is what I've got. Everything is pulled apart. But I don't know how to pull the pump assembly out. Also does the gas valve come out or should I just leave it alone since it turns in and out fine. Before I took the lantern apart I oiled the pump and it held pressure.

Use a small flat bladed screw driver and pry the clip on the pump out of the holes....once removed...unscrew the valve and pull the plunger out. Remove the brass, and I remove the cap...plug the holes with some corks and paint after stripping/cleaning. Doug

unless the valve is leaking at the knob - do not remove it unless you are willing to replace the graphite packing! if it is loose, then try tightening up the nut to snug it a little. I've destroyed many of them little graphite cylinders until if figured out that if it ain't broke and leaky, leave' em in! However, i do remove the whole valve assembly to give the F/A tube a good cleaning. Since you have this far down - I would hate to think that a clogged F/A tube was a problem that showed up during the first light up attempt and you had to tear the whole thing down again! ;)

Oh, great, my brother had to tell me about graphite cylinders. I at first thought I had broken something else. He kept telling me not to take stuff apart. Well, bull headed sister was determined to clean entire lantern. Directions don't tell you not to take apart stuff if it's not broken. Directions only show how to take apart.

Oh, well.....

Thanks for the help. I did get the pump off and picked up some paint today. I'll try the Rustoleum . I have had great luck with it on my Jeep parts.
The packing is still in good shape so I'll leave it alone.

I always just take the entire valve out of the fount. I have never had the need to disassemble the valve itself.

When you paint, put he fuel cap back on the fount just a couple thread. Then you can paint both at the same time. I plug the pump hole before painting. I then have a piece of wood dowel 12" long I thread into the fount. By using the dowel I can paint the fount all at once. Once painted, I clamp the dowel in a vice to let it dry.
