Rehabbing a 426-D Coleman 3-Burner Stove

Postby Alfred » Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:16 pm

Hey Gang,

Very happy to have acquired this 426-D Coleman 3-burner stove, purchased from another member of the T&TTT list at a good price.

I've been wanting one of these for family camping and ready to start rehabbing it. I could not find a date stamp, like they have on the lanterns, do they not stamp these or am I not looking the right place?

Also, I am wondering how to approach where the paint has been burned off in the middle of the lid (both sides) - Wondering if my first thought of just spraying it with a can of flat green Rustoleum spray paint is well-advised(?) also wondering where one should start when refurbishing one of these?

Last, of course, wondering where I will fit this project in along with working on my Coleman E-Bay Frankenlantern, and actually finishing the camper!

But the Coleman 3-Burner Stove is cool!

Look on the tabs of the fuel tank = sometimes it's stamped there. That three burner should clean up just fine - the reason why so many are burned in the center is that most folks don't wait long enough for the flames to totally dissipate before closing the unit up. Try this: after turning the unit off and purging the tank of pressure, turn off the lights and see how long the it takes for the blue flame to disappear - in the daylight, its hard to see. it takes a few minutes for the fuel in the generator and the air mixture chamber to fully be consumed. many people actually close the unit too soon, hence the burned spot high in the center! Let the whole stove cool to the touch before closing and you'll not have that problem - howver, scorch marks on the wind guards are a diffent story!

Nice find Al, congrats!

I'd recommend a gloss finish paint, it will clean up a lot better than flat when something splatters on it. My personal preference is Rustoleum, it gives a nice hard finish when cured. But Krylon is good too.

That looks like a new enough model that the bottom of the tank tabs should be stamped with the date.

Good luck

Alfred it would appear the black is soot over the paint. If the paint is still in tact try Wesley's whitewall cleaner to remove it first. We had a home fire years and years ago and I was able to salvage some badly scorched family heirloom china using the white wall cleaner the stuff is awesome.

Al, glad you like the stove. I know that I found the date on it somewhere, perhaps on the outer case somewhere.....on the bottom?

Tank is stamped D 66

Postby Alfred » Sun Aug 22, 2010 10:20 pm

Tank is stamped D 66, so I am assuming that indicates December 1966(?).

Al, sometimes Coleman dated things by yearly quarters instead of months. Depended on the item. My guess would be 4th quarter of '66.
