When I took the stem out, a tiny piece of wire broke off, looked like the tab of a staple...It was right behind the threads of the tip.

Was this the cleaner you were talking about?

Doh! And double doh! This Frankenlantern is turning into horror story! (Grin). I was afraid that might be the case.

So, do I use the generator specified by the 228-f top, or by the 1951 base?

I am thinking maybe I will be in the area of the Coleman Outlet in Commerce, GA over the Thanksgiving break, and just carry the lantern in with me then?

Use a 220E5891 Generator - it's a common one and works in my '53 model well.. May I suggest a really good cleaning before you install the new generator. Also Check at ACE or TrueValue Hardware store - some stock the generators in their store. Now don't throw away the old one - you never know when you might need the tube - and yes, thee cardboard tube is necessary in the generator - have fun. I Recently bought a 242 C off of e-bay ($25.00) and gave it a good cleaning and paint job. i know you probably don't want to disassemble the whole thing, but it WILL give you piece of Mind when you got to light it again in the future. MY 242 and 220's all light and work well - and all it took was a little cleaning and patience. Heck, my daughter had more fun shaking the fount full of BB's to descale it interior - make it something the whole family can learn from

Yes, actually I think with the guide Jeremy sent, and under the good advisement of the group, it might be fun to clean it up and rebuild it.

I won't be able to get back to it until later in the week. I think there are probably several places locally where I can buy a generator, although I am always looking for a good excuse to stop off at a Coleman Outlet!

(OK, this is an update 8mos later...)

Hey Gang,

Visited the Coleman Outlet Store in Sevierville, TN last week and talked to them about rebuilding my Frankenlantern and they gave me a card to contact:

Anyway, I ordered the generator for the 228f and a gasket. This is where he said he would start with a rebuild. So, hopefully when the parts arrive I will be able to get it lighting up again!

Hey gang,

OK, new generator and also the tank seems to be holding pressure, but still won't light. Noticed a little bit of gas/dampness at the base.

I seem to have some sort of jam in the side cleaning lever (?) everything seems to move freely until I actually start tightening the nut, then the little rod that moves up/down gets stuck and the cleaning lever gets stuck in the 'up' position, won't move 360degrees.

Any thoughts?

It sound like the tip cleaner assembly is not seating in to the eccentric block.

If you take the generator out, does the block move up and down?
Can you pull the block out? If so, make sure the slot is facing the handle.

Yes, the piece that goes up/down inside the assembly was bent and not going down into the pipe correctly. I got it straightened out and the new generator in, new mantles, and it lit right up!
