Removing the packing nut and check valve..

Postby letterman7 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 4:25 pm

Hi gang,
After coming back from a week's vacation, it's time to fix one of my Coleman lanterns, a decade old (at least!) 220. The check valve isn't holding anymore, so I orderd a new one and a new valve just to do it and now, after actually taking the valve out, realize I have no clue how to loosen that check valve nut to get it out. I don't want to scrape up the inside of the tube with long nose pliers, so any suggestions?

Good luck! I ended up buying a check valve removal tool. It works really slick getting them out without wrecking them. It sounds like yours is shot anyways but, sometimes you can fix them by soaking in carb cleaner and getting the little ball inside loose.

I got a big ol' screwdriver and ground down the tip to fit into the slot, hung a pair of vicegrips on it and twisted. Did the trick.....

Figured it would be a combination of things. Almost like breaking loose the oil fill on an old VW....

I just used one of by big screw drivers. Didn't have to grind anything down. But perhaps the next time I get a check valve out i will build me a special tool. After seeing pictures of them on Ebay it will not be to hard.
