New Lantern

Postby Judeyramone » Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:20 pm

Found at Salvation Army - $14.99. Jul 69. Sprayed a little carb cleaner into the pump to loosen it up, oiled it... cap leaks, so I need a new one (had the same problem on my 500A). Vent is perfect... not a scratch or chip to be found. Has a Coleman Pyrex globe.

Had to buy mantles, of course.

The rust at the bottom is minor surface rust, just around the outside . Looks much worse in pictures than it really is. PO did a little touch up, and not very well. Is this (rust) going to be an issue for me down the road? It's not bubbly, disintegrating rust. The underside of the fount looks like new.

Didn't somebody tell me this was a disease when I posted my $3 garage sale stove?

OOoooo a pretty nice Sears one!! Congratz!

Yup, a disease. A contagious and uncurable disease.

I'm sure someone did. Aren't you glad you didn't listen?

Nice find on the Sears! The Pyrex globe would be original and not that easy to find these days (I know, I've been looking lol). The rust only looks like surface in the pic. You could just clean it off with steel wool and put clearcoat over it if you don't want to do a full repaint. The blue on those Sears lanterns was notoriously thin.

Ha. Old indeed... but new to me. And a welcome addition. My kids & I have been using flashlights for years.

Yeah, the paint doesn't seem to be very high quality, although I do like the blue/black and would like to keep it that way. It's flaking off in a few spots. I've seen a couple of Rainjer's restorations. If I knew what paint to use, and where to get a decal, I might give the fount a quick resto (search function, here I come). The rest of it really is like new - clearly, it was rarely used.

Cool lantern! I don't have one of them blue Sears lanterns (yet). Congrats! I've found things at Salvation Army before, but never a cool lantern!

Nice lantern! I need to find one of those that I can do a re-paint on with the black vent and do the tank teal to match the new trailer. Doug
