It actually works best when running. So thats one step known. Let us know what you find in the tubes. FYI, it doesnt have to be much of a blockage to cause trouble. A single small spiders nest can do it sometimes.

There was a spider web in the riser tube. but when I put it back together it did the same thing, I am thinking that there might be more up in the top section or in the tubes that go to the mantels but I can't get in there to clean it because of the screens at the end of the tubes. I tried using compressed air, that didn't help.

Hillman, What model is your lantern? the tubes Should just screw into the housing and the caps that have the screens should also just screw on too - but without the model # I'm at a loss to say either. I've had to completely clean out the tubes with a wire brush used for cleaning out rifles to get optimal performance. Them little critters can get really far up there and sometimes compressed air won't dislodge their silk nests. ;)

Those newer dual fuel lanterns have a plastic fuel pick up tube in them and a valve stem core in them for the instant light feature. I most certainly suspect that the cheapy newer technology is giving you trouble.

Take the lantern all the way apart and check the fuel stem.

O.k. we were typing at the same time. The frame rest and collar are held on by a clip under a nut just beneath the generator. Loosen the nut and remove the clip and you should be able to strip it down to just the font and valve. Note the location of the valve then screw it out of the font and inspect the fuel stem and replace what is needed.

Hillmann, look at your fuel control knob. The stem that the knob is attached to, does the stem go through a nut? If so, tighten the nut and see if that corrects the problem. For some reason, I remember having some problems with one of mine "surging" from bright to slightly dimmer. I tightend the nut up and that fixed the problem.

I am puzzled at why it works for awhile and then peters out. My first guess was spider webs in the air tubes, too......................
Now, I don't know so I thought I'd throw in my 2 pennys....... Let me know if I'm all wet on this one.

I put the generator back on last night without putting the rest of the lantern together. I pumped it up and opened the valve it would spray a nice mist for a few seconds like it is supposed to then it would turn into a small stream then stop back to a stream then a mist again. I looked at Coleman's troubleshooting website and it looks like the pick up tube in the tank is plugged. Hopefully I will be able to get it working by tomorrow night for walleye fishing.

I finally got a chance to work on the lantern last night. I took it completely apart and blew it all out with an air compressor and put it back together it at least lights now but still surges a little bit I am going to try running it on Coleman fuel instead of gas tonight and see if that helps.

I also had an interesting experience with it last night. I lit it around eight o'clock set it on the back deck to make sure that it would stay lit. Around midnight it started humming extremely loud (almost like the noise a wine glass makes when you rub the rim with a wet finger) when the pressure in the tank started to drop. When I pumped it back up it stopped. Is that a common thing to happen?

I have no idea if that noise is common or not. Maybe you just discovered "Musical Colemans"

Now I have another problem :( ,but with a different lantern when I took it apart I broke the cleaning tip off the part that moves up and down in the generator. And I can't find any place that sells generators any more. I know wallmart used to stock them, but no longer do. Any suggestions on where to get parts?

Hi

There is Old coleman parts

https://www.oldcolemanparts.com/shop/home.php

Or Ebay. There are probably other places, those are right off the top of my head. So it is pretty sketchy.
