If the lamp has a cloth or fabric shat you need to have a glass globe. If it has a glass shade you do not. I light mine with a mini torch. I pump it up 20-25 time. I pre-heat the generator. After a 10-30 seconds it will actually light the mantles & then I crack the valve a little to give it gas. Once it settles down I crank the valve open and give it a few more pumps. Doing it this way I don't get big flames.

Slowcowboy, what Jeremy means is if the globe is off you can pre heat the generator with a lighter or small torch, than crack the valve open to light the mantles. This keeps the lantern from flaming up and smoking. I don't bother pre-heating my generators because I always light my lanterns outside and with globes and vents on.

Dawn- I was talking about lighting a lamp. With the lamp you can pre-heat with the globe in place.

Slowcowboy- I use a butane HF mini torch. You just hold the flame on the generator for a 20-30 seconds and it should start to light. You may need to crack the valve foe 3-4 seconds before preheating to make sure ther is fuel in the generator.
