Ivanhoe model 120 - Finished

Postby starleen2 » Thu Nov 04, 2010 2:14 pm

OK folks – here’s something that is not Green but could used for camping. It’s an IVANHOE model 120 dual wick stove/heater. It has only two moving parts, the wick adjuster and the mica door on the chimneys. This was made cira 1920 and was meant to be fired with kerosene – however I have it running on Coleman fuel just nicely! This little thing puts out an incredible amount of heat.

I found it a couple of moths ago – but had to replace the wicks before I could fire it up. Guess what arrived today?

Installed the set and gave it light

A little adjustment and more heat

Starts off yellow – then warms up to nice blue flame

Perfection Co - the makers of the Ivanhoe also make kerosene water heaters as well

Um... isn't it kind of dangerous to run a kerosene heater on a low octane fuel like gasoline Coleman fuel?

Come guys - you're over thinking this - after all don't we have pressured Lanterns filled fuel (or gasoline - god forbid) only inches away from two hot mantles and flames? This stove is open air ventilation through the two wick tubes - heck open the tank and light off the fuel in the tank - all it's going to do is burn at the hole - no explosion. I'm more worried about losing a graphite seal on a QL - than I am with this. If I'm wrong - then may be my last post - just look for the mushroom shaped cloud somewhere over Texas

Just an Update – Finally got around to finishing this stove – Used 20008 high heat black. I stripped all the old paint off and gave it a good sanding.

Absolutely BEEUTIFUL Scott! Nice project...

On the fuel thing, I think everyone needs to remember that back in the 20's, Kerosene was a completely different critter than it is today. Back then, a large percentage of the kerosene was used for heating lighting purposes. It is nothing like the multitude of grades available today which can run the range from scented wick type lamps use to F15 fuel, and some rocket applications. I'd think that any of the wick type heat/lighting grade kerosenes would need to be "juiced" to get to a white gas octane. Other opinions may vary. Doug

Scott, Nice job on the stove. If I can ask, where did to get the new stuff for the doors? I have one something like that and need the [glass] for them. I have not done anything with it thinking they were not around any more.

Thanks Scott
Just what I need, another project. But it does help working on this stuff. Takes your mind off everything else for a bit. ;)
