How does one know if a generator is used up? It seems to be a wear part but most I have seen are still good or work?

I have met a few generators that were gone beyond repair. For the most part - generators can be rebuilt, cleaned, out, and reused - However, there comes a point when the tip cleaner just enlarges the hole in the orifice just large enough to supply more fuel vapor than air and thus the generator needs replacing.

Ohhhh. So it the orifice that wears, I am glad I asked because I thought it might be what seems to be a paper tube inside that gets used up.

If you ever want to clean one just know that some of them have a little mesh screen at the top that the cleaning picker goes through - sometimes these get clogged up as well. A generator can run just fine without it - so just remove it  Never throw away a generator - keep it cause you might need to change out tips

Lantern generators can be a mystery at times...it seems like it should work, but it doesn't...swap it out, runs fine...go figgure. I save all of them...thinking that somehow down the road it will magically work.

Stoves on the other hand, you can see all the crud in it and clean it out if you can get it apart. On all my really old stoves, I've never had to replace a generator, which is good since those parts aren't available on some.

On some of them...it's a trip...no spring, it's 6 steel rods all stacked in the tube around the center rod. I've even drilled the end on the rod with a micro bit, stuck in a piece of copper from a stranded wire, crimped it and shaped it to make a new tip cleaner that was broken off. Doug

Clean generator interior - good

Carbon-caked - no good, or, might come back for more service if the carbon can be successfully removed.

Some can be cleaned up; some can't. And then there's the jet tip wear as Scott mentioned.

I have a 1983 425 that I have used a whole lot. I have never changed the generator. I guess it is still working ok. It has its own place in the TD.

What ever material is used in the stove generators it is all about increasing the surface area use to vaporize the fuel.
