Todays Estate Sale find

Postby Wolffarmer » Thu Nov 17, 2011 4:05 pm

Woooo Whoooooo!!!

Went to an Estate sale today and it wasn't looking to promising then down in the basement kind of sticking out of a box I see an olive drab canvas something with a bit of aluminum showing. Pulled it out and headed out to pay $6 for it.

Image

A Coleman 530 B46 GI stove, With the two pot case, funnel, wrench handle, little booklet and canvas bag. The picture shows it boiling water. The flash washed out the flame. Just had to put a cap on it with a good gasket ( I have ran out, need to get more ) Oil up the pump leather, some white gas and a few flips of the cleaning lever it fired. The nickel font is in very good shape. Whole stove is in pretty good shape. I think I did good. The first 530 I have seen in the wild.

I was at an auction and got one of those in really nice shape, it fired right up. I love having something that old that is in that nice of shape.

But I have a dumb question. I read where Coleman made those for the Army during WW2 because they needed something small and reliable that ran on the same fuel a Jeep had in it so fuel would be available.

Wellll, when I light mine, it starts out with a two foot flame until things get warmed up. How the heck would they have used this thing in a foxhole and not get seen and subsequently shot at?

I guess hide it well, get the flame out of sight, daytime use only ???

Or maybe don't use it any where near the front lines ?
