1955 Coleman 200a

Postby Moho » Mon Nov 28, 2011 10:50 am

In process of doing a 1955 200a I picked up this weekend. Being this is the first 200a I've done things are a little different on these and having a problem getting the tip cleaner stem out. Are there any secrets to getting the stem out? everything is loose and it turns, but it won't come out of the valve stem assembly. You can see how far I've been able to move it in the 2nd picture below, lower left corner.

Thought I'd share a couple progress pictures. I know it's not a super special or rare lamp, but love the look of these and this one is my favorite and probably the one I will keep in my tear for everyday use. I'm still missing the red knob and direction disc and the valve stem which has no threads on the knob side. I'm trying to track them down now.

Moho - do yourself a favor and leave it in! - It is not necessary to remove the stem cleaner. You'll have a terrible time trying to get it back in plus you'll have to replce the graphite packing as well.

A WORD TO ALL THE NEWBIE COLLECTORS! Unless you REALLY want to have the experience of replacing the graphite packing in the valve assembly, leave it alone. If the valve wheel is a little loose – tighten the packing nut up a bit until a little resistance is felt. Same thing with tip cleaners. If Fuel is making it past the FA tube and bubbling out the base of the generator – then fuel is getting past the valve. Many make the mistake of tearing the valve assembly apart – only to find that they have to now replace the graphite packing as well ( it usually gets destroyed upon removal). Believe me – you’ll need to order two sets for the same lantern – cause no gets em’ in right the first time! So my advice is – leave it alone if it is working!

lol, was doing it for the experience of disassembly.

I think I see what the issue is, there's a brass collar inside which is probably stuck.

Going to leave this one alone so I don't have to bend the brass handle to replace the packing. My semi-OCD-ness wants it apart still though

Looks great Mojo.

Did you get the porcelain redone on the vent? Looks like new.
