The Ceremonial Burning of the Mantles

I broke down a few weeks back and purchased my birthday lantern. I told myself that I would never get so weird and buy a lantern just because it was my birthday month and year, but there it sat on Ebay taunting me.

Of course it wasn't in the best of shape.

So I had to start tearing it down.

A little primer.

A little Krylon Hunter Green.

All parts soaked in vinegar, sanded and shined up.

Replacement / proper year globe installed and we have the "Ceremonial Burning of the Mantles".

The only thing missing is my Coleman decal which should be arriving any day now!

Nice looking job you did on that lantern. I got my birthday lantern this week also.

It is in pretty good shape. I haven't done anything to it yet other put one mantel on it and a cap gasket.

Congrats Mark and Randy. Very cool to find your B-day lanterns. You're lucky too, there are a few dates that are VERY hard to find, my B-day being one of them. I've only seen one, and it belongs to someone with the same B-day and he's not turning loose of it for nothing.

Good job on the resto Mark. Bet that one sees plenty of use now. :thumbsup:


and it's not weird, it's being commited to your hobby. Or is that needs to be commited... :thinking:

a 12/60 Randy. At this point anything with that date would make me happy. The only one I know of so far was a 200A.

I'm looking for a 12/62 200A for my bday lantern. Saw one once and some overseas person bit it up way too high.

Mine is in the years they put letters on them. Seems it is still a mystery if they only used A and B, Seems I have seen an early 40s with a C. Can't recall any with a D. So for my birthday lantern I got a B 1950. I have seen some from 1950 with a number. I think it was a Canadian lantern. I have a 500 stove that is a 1953 B. The only 12 thing I have is a 12 1969 200A. I bet in the manufacturing process they would build a model for a bit, store them then build something else. Or build parts and store them for final assembly later. So there could well be a month that a specific item was not built. And i bet there are some months they didn't build much of anything at all.

would like a 6/66 something here...I havent been looking too hard..Ive been obsessing about a lantern I know is in a building in a flea market and I cannot go forth and seek it till memorial weekend.. :lol: its either a cole-max or petromax...I cannot remember but it was spotless..and pretty...

Randy, that's the general thinking over at the CCF too. Some months it seems there were few if any founts made, must of had enough stock built. I've seen several 11/60s and 1/61s.

Paul, there are 6/66 ones out there. It's kind of a popular date just because of the numbers, you should be able to find one when you really go looking.

Mark...great job on the lantern. It might seem kinda corny the whole birthday thing...but what other items can you get like this that are dated to the exact month...I guess food stuffs...but who wants to hang onto a birthday jug of milk! Doug

Shaun, makes sure its the long form.

So did any of you guys bake your stoves in the oven to cure the paint faster? :lol: I never did, but when I did the lantern it really did a good job!

I don't do it in the house oven...but I do build a hot fire in the wood stove in the shop and let them hang about 6"-12" above it. Doug

Randy,

Pick up some "Mother's Mag & Chrome Polish" and you'll be able to shave in the reflection of your fount. After I buffed my Col-Max with it I swear by that stuff! 8)
