Enough of the food porn. For now.

Went to an estate sale this morning.

Image

It is just a 220F Feb 1966. Looks as if it has not been used much, The air tube still shows a lot of brass color. I oiled the pump. There was fuel in it. Mantels still good. The fuel cap was really stuck on so I decided to try a light up before trying to get it off as there was no way it would ever seal again. I pumped it up and it fired right up after that dry generator got full. Burned for an hour or so. Shut it down and got the fuel cap off. Man that was the most stuck on one I have had so far. Burned out the old one and put new gasket in. Lantern is burning now.

Paid to much for it at $25 but at an estate sale what can one do? Kick the kids while they are down? There are several old school mantels in the original box, flaps ripped off.

In the back ground is my black walnut tree, just budding out, some old sheds and a corner of my shop on the right.

Oh people of the ancient light. What is $25 when it comes to a port in the storm of darkness. Great lantern Randy.

Thanks Kirk. I hope to have another mil spec before the end of the day.

Is there a vaccination for this?

I ran that 220F for a bunch of hours last night until the fuel ran out. Who knows how old that stuff was. Inside of the fount looks great. The box it came in was stamped to a hardware store in Twin Falls ID. that went out of business in the mid 80's. I also noticed on the box is printed. "Apply two coats varnish for water resistant carrying case". Now there is an idea to make less expensive cases. Have boxes made with flaps that make into handles and some inserts to hold the lantern in place. Could be foam.

Randy, I have a Canadian 200 from the early 60's and the box was shellacked, with the bottom flaps opened, not the top. It was recomended by Coleman that you traveled with the lantern up side down so the mantles would last longer

Jan, I always wondered about why they recommended that but it only seemed to be for the single mantle lanterns. Could that be because they where lighter and at least on the 242s the stud on top was much larger than the double mantle lights? I have only see 1 242 and 2 200A's so far.

Well Yesterday I said I might have another Mil spec before the day was out. The craigslist seller didn't get back to me until today so I dove over to get it. Just a 1980 SMP. I haven't fired it up yet but he did have a pic showing it burning in his add
Image

We started talking and found that we worked at Dell computer at the same time for about 5 years so we spent some time telling war stories about that duty. Also found we had the same Alma Mater, The University of Idaho. so we told more stories. When I was getting ready to leave, mentioned I collected Colemans and said he had a lantern in one of those Coleman metal boxes so he dug it out. A real nice 220J in the box, the first metal Coleman lantern box I have seen in person. He uses that for camping. Then he said he has a neat little 2 burner stove. So he goes to get it.

Wait for it peeps. gotta build some tension and as I am no Alfred Hitchcock.

Nice score ! I have been resisting buying a mil spec. But I also must admit I haven't been in the right place at the right time.
They seem like when they have problems they can be really hard to deal with. Maybe someday!

I got the Mil Spec fired up. She had a bit of RUG ( regular unleaded gas. I had to ask once ) in it. Put a bit of CF in it and got it fired up, It took a while as it blew soot for some time. Now it is settling down to a dull roar. After a bit of burning I had to put it outside. It was really stanking up the place but it is burning

Now for part two. The guy came walking out of his garage with a small aluminum box that I could not place. Set it down of opened it up.

IT IS A 523 MEDICAL STOVE.

I have never seen one of those in person either.

So after $40 for the lantern and $60 for the stove..........

Image

Image

As you can see it has the wind screen, which i have yet to figure out how to put on. And tool kit. I have not yet found a date. If it is suppose to have one. The box is in pretty good shape, a bit of paint or enamel is off the top plate with some light rusting. Not to bad really.

So now I have to work real hard next week.
