Wow - I had no idea this lantern was so special...

Yes, and like the original Frankenstein...there are plenty of remakes on it.

Hey Judy/Rebapuck,

The Coleman Outlet is at:
100 Legends Rd
Myrtle Beach, SC 29579-7076
(843) 903-6554

It is on the main road leading into Myrtle Beach, if you are traveling Eastward from the mainland to the coast - And across the street from a big outlet shopping center.

By the way, right next door to the Coleman Factory Outlet is the Lodge Cast Iron Factory Outlet. There is also a big tool warehouse sort of outlet on the other side of the Coleman store. So basically, watch your wallet!

Have fun, my kids LOVE Myrtle Beach, we get there at least once a year, usually during the Summer.

Frankencaddy!

Postby Alfred » Thu Nov 12, 2009 9:12 pm

One of the T&TTT members PM'd me that my Frankenlantern was reminiscent of the Johnny Cash song, "One Piece at a Time", which was about a fellow who worked at the Cadillac assembly line and smuggled out a Cadillac in his lunch box "one piece at a time" over several model years, which later did not match when they were assembled...

Old promo photo for the song:

Hey Gang,

I've been kidding around a little about my Frankenlantern, just want everybody to know that I appreciate the knowledge and feedback I received from everyone. I don't know much about these, so I appreciate you all being a resource for me. This is how I learn about these things, and one of the reasons I really enjoy being a part of this group!

Now, I wish the mail carrier would deliver the darn thing...

Frankenlantern Arrived

Postby Alfred » Sat Nov 14, 2009 3:44 pm

Hey gang,

So the lantern came today. Looks nice, I have to put some mantles on it before I can fire it up. I will send more pix later.

Interestingly, upper part is stamped 228-f, so it must be a 228-f top on a 1951 base (?)

Here is a picture of the inside (with glass and top removed)

Early indications are not good - Can't get it lit, the pump is shot. Might try to run up to SuperWalmart to see if I can get a pump for it...

Al....if it's a leather pump cup on it, pull it out, bend it backwards like an umbrella and see if it is cracked really bad. If not...dip it in some oil and let it soak it in. That usually works, but it may be shot. Doug

Probably can't tell from the out-of-focus pictures, but that's a square nut on the end of the pump. I am thinking this can't possibly be the nut that came with it(?) Looks like the corners of the nut were ground down slightly.

Anyway, not only is the pump not pressurizing, but it is getting jammed when the pump is pushed all the way in, so that it will not come back out again, unless you remove the whole assembly(?)

Anyway, I am hoping a new pump will still work. They are less than $10 at Walmart, I think.

Al -from the blurred photo - I see the pump needle in the pump handle. if it's getting Jammed - take a pair of needle nosed pliers and gently remove the square needle valve. I had one that was slightly bent at the top and kept the Pump from Sealing and jamming on each stoke.

Notice the slight bend at the top

Before you spend you $$$ - Try a little oil on the pump - and maybe clean out the bore with a soft cloth. I reconditioned the pump from a dried out leather cup using some 3-n-1 oil.

BTW - it might do some good to spray out the bore with some carb cleaner to get some of the crud out and keep the check valve clear - so screw that needle valve back in before you spray the bore

If I knew any better, I'd be embarrassed, for posting the pix without knowing the needle was in the pump! Thanks for the feedback - I'll work on it and report back.

Wow! That's a great link. Thanks, Jeremy!

Meanwhile, I got the stem out of the pump, lubricated everything with some 3in1 oil, and it seems to pump up and hold some pressure now. At least the pump starts showing some pushback after a number of pumps, and you can feel pressure escaping if you loosen the cap.

But it still won't light. What I am NOT hearing is the hissing noise when I turn the valve on, that I hear in my other lantern, so I am thinking the gas is not getting up into the lantern.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have time to work on it anymore until next week. But I will study the link you sent me, and keep you all posted.

Thanks, Al in Asheville

Al.....put a little pressure in the tank, crack the valve, then spin the tip cleaner, the little wire loop. If it's in the wrong position, it won't allow pressure to come out the generator. On a lantern....it's not an "up to light" thing like on a a stove. It just rotates to clean out the crud in the end of the generator. It's down to light....but that may or may not be your issue. Doug

PS....that was one incredibly dry looking cup on it, doesn't even look like it ever had any oil on it, like new leather.

Al... 3 in 1 oil is not the best thing to soak the pump in. I use any NEW not used motor oil. Pour a little into a cup, pull the leather back like an umbrella like Doug said and let it soak for a couple of hours. If the pumps not too cracked it should work. The hard part is trying to stuff the pump back in. The link Jeremy sent is a really good site. Good luck.
