Turbo 413 Cookmaster roadtested!!

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Nice. I'm thinking perfect for a giant pot of chili or soup - you know a pot that won't center on one of the burners in a 413/425.

Boy that thing did get run over by a truck didn't it?

Here's the latest on my Frankenstove....took it camping last weekend. Altitude was about 5500', may or may not be a factor. What I found was that after running it like full tilt to boil up a pot of water for dishwashing...which happened pretty quickly...once I backed off on the fuel to it...there was so much latent heat that it caused the gas to flare off before it hit the burner and blow itself out. Once cooled it ran fine....must need a supercharger on it rather than a turbo.

I also found that I need to clean the tank on it...ball check valve didn't work like it should, but then I just doctored the thing up and took it out. Heats up for a waffle in a hurry though. Doug

Doug, you definitely know how to make the old look new and work like new again, too! Now, if you could just do that with people, you'd be a billionaire!

I went to another estate sale today and picked up a sad looking 413. I sure would like a single burner in a box type stove for my trailer instead of a double burner or a 500/502 type stove. I can't remember using the 2nd burner in my 425 and the official single burners just don't work for me like I want. So I can cut the box down on the 413, ( I will probably keep only one burner ) and have more room for storage instead of packing a useless burner.

Randy....here's another idea. I need to play with it. What about stacking up more burner plates in it since you aren't going to be using the aux burner on it? Kinda like putting on a larger dia. exhaust on a truck, let's it breathe. It's got the pressure to run 2....just put all that into 1 tall stack all the same size. It would be a gas hog....but might be a fun thing to play around with to see if it would work. Be safe if you try....Doug

Once I was looking down the carburetor of a car and it backfired. Took a good hunk out of it.

Didn't lose any skin

It's bucketing snow here right now....if it keeps up and I lose power again...I figure the 1941 242B will get exercise in the morning, followed up by the '69 220 in the afternoon! Eats will happen on the '40 417B. Doug

Sounds Cozy Doug. Hope you don't lose power for to long.

I got about 3 inches of wet snow here today. Stopped the farming until next February/march. Next week looks to be real real cold. I had better check the fuel in my pressure gas appliances tomorrow. And see if I can get that last 413 to burning. That one makes 4 coleman double burners and 2 single colmans I have, Plus an Optimus backpacking stove and an AGM. Plus 5 Lanterns.

Will Betty Ford take us in?

Doug

I slogged my way out to the shop today to play with the latest 413 I got. It has a bit of a dent on the front left and the towel bar is gone. no biggie. Tank looked clean, added some fuel, pumped up and no fuel come out of the cap when i held the tank so it was in fuel. First time one of these things did not need that gasket replaced right away. It fired right up and burn like it should. Harder than the dickens to get the fuel shut off.

On to playing with the burner plates on it. Can't scavenge any from the left burner as it is smaller diameter, but that unit does burn good on the right position. Looked at a 425c i got a few weeks back, main burner is same diameter but one less burner ring so pulled one from it and tried in the 413. I didn't blow anything up and it seems to burn ok. Looking closer at the burner in the 425 there is a re-stricter plate in it to make the middle opening smaller. wonder what will happen when that is taken out. Any one watch NASCAR? I have not tried that yet.

Also if one is to cut a 413 down to one burner, Put a 413 generator on a 425 tank and that can fit inside the 413, turned 90 degrees to normal and it might all close up to a bit smaller package. Probably to much trouble compared to making a bigger spot for in in the trailer.

Be safe out there

Randy

I have rarely used both burners on my 425. I would say I have never but I really am not sure. Nor have I seen many people using both burners. And the 500 and 502s just don't really cut it, even if you do have some kind of wind break. Sure would have been nice to have a single burner, fold up case stove.

We used ours for the oven and other cooking duty and it works real well. I tried the 500 and 502's but couldn't get the heat regulated like the larger stoves. I find that the regular stoves are just a wee bit too small for what I am cooking with
