Post Pictures of Your 'Big Hat' Colemans!

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Here's the 1940 228 I did. This one went to Mike A for all the times I "borrow" his blast cabinet. Thanks Mike! It's perfect to go with his 40 Ford flatbed and Sedan. Doug

^ That's beautiful! When I have two of those I can then rest from Coleman "collecting" for the time being. Right. Right?

Meanwhile, to fix my 228B jones, here's a new one for me; just lanted on my doorstep here after work. This is just pulled from it's box and before any cleaning:

May 1952 228E. Looks to have been used once, maybe twice:

...and I've got two more like this on the way: a '53 in similar shape and a '62 never-been-fired (allegedly).

I'm excited! :dancing

Postby PresTx82 » Fri Dec 31, 2010 10:16 pm

I bought these two at a swap meet for $17.00 a piece:

Cleaned them up and they fired up pretty good. I did however have an intial "fire up" situation:

That plastic bucket wasn't a good idea..........................

Nice. Somehow I don't think the hat will make it past the initial fire-up. :D

Here's my bighats, a 1963 sears and a 1950 228D I just got on Saturday. An antique store buy for $14. Should have the 228 running in a day or two.

Hillmann

What was the purpose of the large tops on them like that?

I don't have a big hat...yet...but I may have an answer to the question. While watching "El Dorado" with John Wayne the other night I noticed the kerosene lanterns in the jail. They were hung high, from the ceiling, and had "big hats" on them. It made me think of this thread...and that maybe the big hats were to reflect the light downward when the lantern is hung high.

Here is my big Hat

Image

A L227 Nov 1927. Not perfect by any means but it does burn. Starting it up can be a bit exciting. Vent top is in near perfect condition, probably about as good as can be expected from a barn find. Font will never shine up as the nickel is pitted. And the stud for the vent seems to be to short or something is up that is the only thing I can figure out. The original pump leather was a hit and miss thing but did work. I have put a different leather it and it pumps a lot better but have to tilt the lantern to screw down the rod. Globe looks to be original.

And here is my birthday lantern, not a big hat but don't want to start another thread. Just got it and it is in pretty good shape. Globe is not original. It is a 220D B 1950. I have seen that a lot of 242s have the months and i sure would like a sep 1950 242, someday. Or a big hat 228.
