Coleman Heater

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

They make a real small galvanized garbage can with a bail handle. But this time of year they sell popcorn in big 5 Gallon tins. The perfect size, and you get a sweet treat while you work on a storage for your heater.
But this can thing will work to suffocate the flame.

You can also pour the fuel out of it into a fuel can and let it burn out. Don't worry, it is not hot enough to catch the fuel on fire. This method is also guaranteed to clear out your camp site so you can get some sleep.

I have let mine get nice and warm and poured fuel on the top and all it did was evaporate. So I am not worried about it. The Coleman direction book actually says to you can pour the fuel out of it to shut it down. I have also put nice and dry wood slivers on the top of mine and after an hour or so they start to kind of carbonize. The heaters are a bear to get going. The ones I have you put fuel on the tops and light that. Flames shoot up about 3 feet or so and after about 15 minutes it might be going.

Propane

Postby Alfred » Wed Nov 02, 2011 10:36 pm

I've got a newer, propane version of the Coleman Catalytic Heater I bought at Walmart a few years ago. It is helpful to get the hands warmed-up in the morning, but does not put out as much heat as I had thought it would. Maybe apples to oranges. The top looks similar, but it uses propane not white gas.

A lantern works about as well, puts out a ton of heat...and light as well, + a lot less hassle to play with. I heated a standy up to 60 degrees with a 24 degree outdoor temp with 1 220. Cranked the valve...shut it off. Either way...a catalytic heater or a lantern will put out a ton of moisture. To each their own. Doug
