Good work Kevin. Nice stuff. Gotta love the homemade boxes. Heck I will buy a lantern just to get a cool old wood box. 8)

Ya know what. I have been on e bay most of the day and I think there are a few folks out in the world collecting Coleman stuff other than us. Why do they want to mess this up for us. We love the stuff and they are just stacking it up someplace like a bunch of horders. No matter what I bid on there is someone who wants to pay more. I just dont understand. :? :?

Coleman Keepers Campfire come on in!

Postby Fyddler » Sun Sep 08, 2013 9:22 pm

So I'm a Colman noob, and have a question. I know in the antique world you ruin the value of a piece by refinishing it. I only paid $5.00 for my 200A, is it considered ok to re-paint and put on replacement decals? Am I ruining its historical value, or does it really matter for a $5.00 piece?

Also, any recommendations for a good 200A red paint brand and color?

Glad to hear that I am not the only one who does that. ;)

It's yours to do as you please. I'm sure I'll never make back what I put into redoing the ones I have.
I don't paint if I don't have to now. It has to be really rusty. I'm beginning to like the rough look.
Unless it's one of my special projects.
For the red 200A I had good luck with VHT SP155 Chrysler Red Engine Enamel.
For the burgundy 200A I used Krylon cherry red gloss.

I'm with Eric. If you want it to look nice and be functional, go ahead and restore it. It will be worth nothing if it rusts to the point that it starts leaking fuel. My 200A had a large amount of paint missing around and inside the collar ( pretty common from what I have seen). It would have been a rusty mess in no time with the humidity we have here. I was able to touch up the paint (Testor's red enamel) without having to remove and replace the label.

Fyddler go ahead and fix it up and paint it. They were made by the thousands. I don't consider them very rare. If it was original unfired and in the box they are worth buko bucks, but not when beat up and well used.

In sure in 40 years my kids will be on The Antique Roadshow and the guy will be like well, it could have been worth $7,500, but since it was re painted its worth $5.00... But that's not my problem!

Fyddler- do what makes you happy with the lanterns. Especially $5 lanterns. No matter what anyone says they are not rare. They are to use and have fun with.

Just never, ever, ever, ever crush propane lanterns like Doug does. Its not good Karma. ;)

Ommmmmmmm. Ommmmmmmmm.

We should not discriminate when it comes to Coleman lanterns. They are equal - one is not better than the other. They are good in their own dimensions. They are all an important and trustworthy tool in aligning ones Chakra.

They keep us calm and well lit.
