Coleman Keepers Campfire come on in!

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

I just learned some cool formulas over at off topic. So Glenn says that if you hoard stuff the number that you need to have of a thing (lanterns) is N+1. That is the number you have plus one. Perfect right?

Then he says there is the next formula which is S-1. That is the number which triggers separation from your spouse -1 which will keep you together.

Brilliant! Thanks Glenn! I dont think this formula allows for drastic compensation deviations. For example S- 4 or 5 to make space for Christmas decorations.

Or N+1 = > sum because of hidden lanterns. Wow I am sick.

Nooooo! When you start to use math to figure out your hobby, you take all the fun out of it (unless you hobby is math). Don't ruin something beautiful with equations that will only cause you to question whether or not you have crossed the line (hint: if you begin to wonder, you have ;) ).

Simple math: old Coleman appliances = fun + cool + hot + fire + light + tinkering

Like doing a cost analysis spreadsheet comparing various hobbies to drag-racing, as a justification to show the wife. Still lost the argument! And then there's trying to do the same for trailer building (not yet to the cast iron or Coleman analysis stage).

I have a few days off for the Thanksgiving Holiday so here is what I have been upto.

First I cooked up some Turkeys in the Traeger BBQ .

Image

Best turkey I ever made.

So today I am making a 200A travel box out of reclaimed lumber from a pallet. Progress so far.

I cut all the edges straight.

Glue up the wood into new panels.

What I discovered AFTER I cut all the pieces is that the vent on a 200a is slightly larger in diameter then the fount!

So please educate a newby to this vintage stuff. I found this at a garage sale for $5. I don't think it's too old, but it's not new either. Under the Coleman and Wichita stuff, it is stamped 6 in one corner and 84 in the other. Is that the build date?

That my friend is a model 288 or close to it. Yes that is the build date.

I love the 288 and its close family members. I would not consider it "vintage" but it is a very good worker. The output is adjustable which is a great feature if you are going to actually use the thing to camp with. Most of the older lanterns are not adjustable. The 288 is also very user friendly and I always recommend it as a first white gas lantern.

Some would say that its to new to be collectable, But I never pass them up at a flea market. I have a few.

Good score. That hat can be cleaned up.

Congrats on the CL2. Those can make some serious light and are pretty easy to master.

Nice find. I have a 288 that is under construction. When I get it finished, I will submit my application to the Green Lantern Corpsmen.
