How much work was it to get the rust off the 200a burner cage and how pleased were you with the close up results?
I have tried different things with mixed results. I have a black band with a real rusty cage that is on my restore list.
I have used high heat silver paint with good results. I really like the look but it can't compare to shined up metal.

Keith it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I soaked the cage in white vinegar for a couple hours, and then scrubbed it with #0000 steel wool. Then put it back in the vinegar for another half hour or so, and scrubbed again. Its amazing what vinegar will do! After all the rust was gone, I rinsed it in warm soapy water, wiped it dry, and polished it right away with Blue Magic polish. I'm curious to see how long it will resist oxidizing again once I start using it. Not sure how long the polish will resist the oxidation once it goes through a few burn cycles. This is all pretty new to me, so we'll see.

Once I get a few of these "beginner" lanterns under my belt, I'll start looking to upgrade the collection, but I'm in no hurry to get anywhere fast. Just enjoying the ride and soaking up the information from Coleman Collectors Forum

If I could find a 12/82 200A I'd be pretty excited though!

It's a 10/82 turd with a clamshell case. There is also a 2/82 turd listed. Maybe you could just add them together (you know 10+2= well maybe not).

Well, I picked up another 242C. This time its a (6/49). Two reasons for doing it - I wanted something to compare my first 242C to, because something just didn't seem right with the vent. And also just because I really like the way they look.

It arrived in pretty decent condition, but I couldn't resist tearing this one down the whole way, and cleaning everything up with a vinegar bath and then hand polishing. My first 242C, I just gave a light cleaning, because I really didn't know entirely what I was getting myself into.



Interesting filler cap, apparently from a Montgomery Ward (Akron)...



Nice "green sunrise" globe...



Nickel is in decent condition. No brass is showing through.



And after a deep cleaning and polishing....









The collar frame and collar cleaned up particularly well....





I also figured out what was wrong with the ventilator on my first 242C. Someone had drilled out the hole in the center to make it fit over the shoulder of the threaded rod, and also modified the slots that fit over the bail (made them longer) so that the ventilator would sit directly on the globe. I'm just not sure why. See the pic below. The bail handle holds the globe in place, so this modification wasn't really necessary. I've seen a few others on eBay with the EXACT same issue. Guess it was the cool thing to do?

Addictive little lanterns,I'm up to 7 so far 5 C's and 2 B's Would love to find a 243 or even a 201 not very common around here.

I've acquired a couple lanterns within the past week. I was coming back from camping and stopped at a yard sale. Not bad for $10.



And also picked up another 242C. This one is has a 6 and an 8 on the bottom. So I guess that makes it an August 1946? At first glance it was in pretty rugged condition. Was planning on stripping the fount and polishing the brass, or just using it for parts.



But then it cleaned up pretty well. The fount was nearly spotless inside. Just waiting on a filler cap gasket and globe to get here.

As usual, its no museum piece. But it's a neat old lantern anyway.
