How easy is it for you all to find those Coleman 3way upright woodgrained ice box cooler chests? And if/when you do come across them, are they reasonable? The ones I've seen on fleabay go for so much (seems like always over $100 with shipping). I was wondering if that is what they go for in the real world?

they are still out there - just be on the lookout for them - I've paid as little as 10 bucks for one - but condition sets the price. make sure it has the ice bin and shelves as well and no cracks on the inside. sometimes you get lucky on ebay and get one for a buy it now price under 40.00. I found two at a flea market full of tools - the guy was using it as a storage bin - he was shocked that I wanted to buy the chest! ;)

IMO - No. I've had four of those type of heaters. They either work very well or not at all. If the catalyst gets consumed or converted - then they are useless. If the snuffer is missing, they are almost impossible to extinguish until the fuel tank is empty and the wick is dry. I found this out while trying to replace a wick in one - I needed to drain the tank - so I did - and though I had snuffed it out. I was able to disassemble the "head" and pull the wick out - then laid it aside on the concrete drive way - to my surprise it ignited again and continued to burn until the wick was bone dry.I even tried dousing it with water and it still ignited again. That was enough for me on those type of heaters[/quote]

Enough said. I will be leaving this one alone. Thanks.

When those heaters are running you can safely pour the fuel back into the container so it will shut down quicker if you don't have a snuffer. The head is not hot enough to cause the fuel to burn. I have dumped a bit of fuel on a running one to test. Just a lot of vapors. Of course don't try this close to an open flame. All bets are off in that case. Be sure to have the video camera running.

Starleen2- What is the most you would pay for one of those coleman coolers? Am I insane to consider $100? How often do you see them on ebay with a BIN of $40 and how much more for shipping? What about a crack or chip on the OUTSIDE of the cooler/ice chest?

Well, no one posted since tues on this thread...I will....papered up/masked off some of the Model 1 box tonight...will get a chance to shoot some Jet black on it tomorrow...let it cure...then shoot the rest of it, later in the day, or on Sun. It's gonna take 2 trips to the paint booth since I didn't remove the lid and burner rest from the body. The burner rest is already done, but in an engine block paint. Box, tank, oven, door/wings first go around...lid in the 2nd go around. A catalyzed alkyd enamel will give a great gloss. Doug

I had a difficult job to. It is part way done. I did however sneek over to the bootfair for a little Coleman fix. I got skunked! Just my luck as of late. Dang it!
I feel a big Coleman score just around the corner. Good luck all.

There is an estate sale here friday, no Colemans are listed. But you never know. Does say there are old hand tools. Coleman or tools, I am there.

Hey, gotta ask for some positive thoughts/prayers/Coleman lighting for my Mom..I'm taking her in for surgery in a few hours..getting her tuned up for camping!

It's fairly complicated abdominal surgery..no cancer or anything, just some major repair work and some removal of non-essential parts. She will be in the hospital at least one night and then I get to be the caregiver (good thoughts toward that one, too!!)

No family around here..so I'm it. Not sure how she will be when she comes home..we are both a bit worried about this whole thing but it has to be done..she's 71 and will be around for over 20 more years, so she needs the tune up!

Please get the positive vibes going...and if you post a lighting picture I'll show it to her when I get to the hospital after work tomorrow when she's recovering...

Thanks everyone. I guess it's ok to post this here, since she is "Vintage camping equipment"...
