Ohhhhh Randy that is good. Maybe some sharp spikes around the bottom. A defensive lantern will be in the works!

I know the picture quality is bad. I took it with my phone. I was at a flea market of sorts and I looked into one of the booths that was closed. Something caught my eye.
Do you see something in the corner behind the guitar and the skates? I see the electric version of these all the time. I own one and even use it sometimes. This one looked different somehow. Maybee a rod with a piece of ceramic on it or something. There was a gate to prevent me from getting any closer. I went back three times to look. Trying to focus my eyes and see a little sharper. I came home did some research and went back to see if what I thought I saw that I did in fact see.

Look at this pictures I found and see if it might look familiar. About half way down the page.

One of the other vendors said he should be there on sunday.
If it is what I think it is.... What shoudl it be worth? What should I offer for it?

A Tilley R1? I found one here at an estate sale about 4 weeks ago but with the CH1 head to make it a lantern. I could not fine the heater head or the neat clip thingy to pre heat it with. I paid $15 for mine. It was made in Sep 1963. From what I have learned the date is stamped on the bottom. Mine is like this 963xa ( or some letters) 1163 would be Nov 1963. My fount is chrome or nickel. This I have not looked to deeply into. Earlier ones the font may be be painted or enameled or brass. It could be a R55, it has a HUGE font with a fuel gage. As far as I have seen there was no lantern heads sold for that one. At least I don't think I have see a picture of a lantern head on one but as they and the R1 share the same vaporizer i don't see why not. The vaporizer on the R1 is 7 inches long. The lanterns for many years has used a 5 inch long vaporizer. They are still available in England. But one can buy a few good Colemans for the price and shipping of one. I had to make a preheat cup for mine. It fires up the lantern just fine but that huge vaporizer takes time to get going. From what I have read the heater head really takes a lot of preheat. Sometimes you have to fill their heater device twice to get it going. They also came with a shield to help. It looks like a tall tin can that slips over the thing to keep the heat in.

The current Tilley lanterns cost £100.00 no vat. That is like over $150 bucks, Shipping extra.

If you get it and need a pre heat cup just let me know and I can make one for you. Doesn't take long. It might light the heating head in still air as long as it isn't to cold. If it has the lantern head it should have a "bug shield" under the globe. It is a split in 2 and hinged with a spring holding it to the vaporizer. I put the pre heat cup on top of this and one can slide it up and down. Also if it has the lantern head you can make a mantel from a Coleman 1111 mantel. I just happened to have 2. OCP has them also. other big mantels will probably work also.

I know what you mean. From what I have head the Tilleys are pretty stable and no great issues with them. Once you figure out how to light and use them. Which is not that hard.

Last weekend I scored some lanterns. One of the four was a 288. Now I know the 288 is not old but its my second 288 and it is a great lantern. Small, adjustable, and super easy to use.

I got it for $5.00. A bargain.

Kirk..I'm too lazy to look..but isn't that a late 70's early 80's lantern? Still awesome!! Compact workhorses, they are! Hopefully I'll run across one of those soon!

Meanwhile..I'm a little concerned about lighting a lantern and getting jumped in to the Coleman Keepers. You see, my only lantern that will light at this time is, um, the 275.

I'm afraid to ask what 'gang' that might put me in!!!
