Dragonfire....get the trailer opened up and maybe put a fan in it to help move air. Is it just a musty closed up smell or something more like a mold? Now is the time to check to see if there has been any water intrusion. Check the tags on the cushions and see if there is any way that they can be laundered or cleaned, provided of course that the tags haven't been "removed under penalty of law".....damn pillow police! If it's a zippered pouch, you can maybe remove the foam and wash it and launder the covers. They can be a bear to get stuffed back in however. Just don't wash them hot and dry hot as they may shrink. I've also got some stuff that takes odors out of older quilts. Shoot me a PM with an address and I'll send you a spray bottle of it...free. Doug

I've got the trailer open not and it's windy as all get out here...just watching the sky for rain...it's getting better. It's not mold or musty. It's an air freshener type thing they sprayed on the cushions. The backrest cushions are attached to the walls of the trailer..I can take them out but would rather not. I aired out the small cushion in the garage already...and the smell left after a week or so. The big one is in the house. Made the house smell, but it's getting better...

The trailer smells better now...but I'll see what it's like after I close it up later. Might get really intense again.

One tag is still on a cushion. I wish the other one was there. It has the original customer's name on it. These trailers were basically made to order.

Doug..I think I will take you up on the offer. This smell has got to go..I need to driveway camp soon!

To bad about that smell. I can relate to that. Maybe even more as it seems there are many many artificial scents that I am allergic or at least react to. There have been times I have been unable to go down the soap/detergent isle in the grocery store. Unfortunately I can't give any tips on how to get rid of it other than airing it out. Well, maybe baking soda? It is used in refrigerators but that is for a completely different smell and I don't think I would bother with your stink.

That's something I plan on doing...putting them on a tarp and leaving them in the sun..but what's sun? Right now we have had on and off rain. They might not get out in the sun before the Dam, so they are airing out in the house and garage for now. And it's working. But the inside of the trailer is still perfumy. It's raining and I really don't want to open it up now just to check if the wind treatment helped or not...I'm hoping vacuuming and air and wiping down the walls makes it tolerable..I'm sure it will go away in time, but not soon enough for driveway camping.

I really hate to take those backrests off..but if I have to they will get the sun treatment when we have sun. Before that they will get Doug's secret weapon and plenty of fresh air. Lucky for me, the wind always comes through in such a way that it will blow right through the trailer if all the windows are open.

Keep the great ideas coming..and yeah, I thought of baking soda sprinkled on the floor and cushions and then vacuuming.

I'm thinking there could have been some wool in the fabric and that is what they were trying to cover up? I don't smell smoke, mold, must or anything but that air freshener stink.

And I have Damp Rid with odor control in there..it's been there for months and it still hasn't broken down.

And when it gets hot, I'm going to clean the carpet. Although I sniffed the carpet (yes, I'm a brave soul!) and I don't smell anything but carpet. It's only those backrests.

What the heck did they spray those things with???? It's horrid!!!

I was thinking, At night close the trailer up with a heater inside. Chemicals move a lot more when warm. Then in the morning air it out again.

Stink update:

I took the covers off the foam. I'm guessing the original owners, or at least 2 owners ago, were smokers..and it soaked into the foam. The covers smell a bit like the 'perfume'...so I think Jerry, the owner before me, sprayed it with something to hide or remove the smoke smell. The covers are being aired in the garage..it just rained hard and hailed here. We have sun for the moment..but more might be on the way..

I want to take the foam out and rinse it and let it dry..but I need to wait for a real sunny day. Then I'll spray it with Doug's secret de-stink spray and see what happens. Meanwhile, I'll air out the trailer some more. I'll spray the backrests with Doug's De-stink, then air out some more. If I have to, I'll remove the backrests and sun them.

Odd that the carpet doesn't smell funny. But maybe because there is just carpet..no foam underneath to trap the odor.

Sorry to change the subject. But we won the peoples choice award for the second year. At the dutch oven cook off. Sorry just bragging. The weather was horrible wind, cold. Rain more wind more wind more cold. Only 9 teams. We did prevale but not easy.

Congrats Kirk!!! That is great!!

Yeah, now you need to show off your skills at the Dam!!!

How often does your team do these cookoffs? I should have gone there instead of the Safeway gas station today...just a bad day...

Give us the details..who you beat and how..what were the other dishes...all that stuff...

and no way was the carpet replaced in the Grasshopper...it's orange/rust sculptured shag. Ain't no way they found a nice piece of that later!!!

Dragonfire...please take this tongue in cheek as that's how it's intended....maybe the smell isn't from the fabric, but from the style of the carpet. It's always been my opinion that shag carpeting stinks! It is however "vintage". Just sayin'..... 8)

PS...a bottle of "smell away" is on the way to you on Monday. Doug
