Holy Grail of stoves

Postby robert johnson » Sun Apr 25, 2010 8:18 pm

Well I haven't posted in a while but I just had to with this one. Last Friday my wife calls me at work and says "There's a black Coleman stove at a garage sale"....GULP from me. "and the Brass tag says Coleman Model 1 on it".....another big GULP from me. YYYYYes I said, you better buy it! So here's my (her) 10 dollar purchase. With some rescearch I have found out it is even an early Model 1, built only in the first 5 or 6 months of 1923. Missing only 2 parts, the oven rack and the flame deflector, only for baking.

Wow Bob!!!!....very very nice find and you sure can't beat the price on it. Nice that the burner grates aren't broken. You can fabricate the rack and the heat deflector. I am missing the deflector in my 2E, don't know exactly what they were supposed to look like. So is your plan to strip it and redo it? I used an engine enamel on the oven on mine, good for 500 degrees, and still has a gloss to it. I have stove envy! Doug

Yes Doug I do plan on resoring it. I got the measurments for the deflector. 4 3/4" X 13 1/4" and .033 thick. and the corners are rounded a little. Thats it!! Another collector gave me the demensions.

Bob, So is the deflector just a rectangular piece with rounded corners? I was thinking that it was 2 rounded burner plates with a connecting piece between them. I've got some .125 plate that I could cut to make one...just haven't done it. What really bugged me, is after it's all restored and operating....fold it up and you end up with scratches on the knuckles on the hinges. I think it's a function of the fact that over the years, they get bent a bit, maybe didn't do it when originally manufactured and that material is so thin that it's a challenge to get it nice and straight.

I punched out all the rods on the hinges when I did mine and did a combination of bead blast on the box and stripping on on the oven portions. Knowing what you have done on previous stoves I'm sure it will be a real jewel! Doug

Thats SWEET! :applause: I still have to work on my 2C. Like yours and Doug's, I too need the deflector, and the oven rack. Hopefully I will get some time this summer (if it ever comes) to redo mine. Keep us posted on the progress, maybe it will give me incentive.

Actually my biggest problem is the #1 burner cap is melted! So anyone out there (you never know) I need a servicable one. It would be an awful lot of work to make one. I'm looking forward to the Coleman Collectors convention here in Seattle in June might be one there.

Well I finally finished the model one!! Yikes what a lot of work!! I don't know how many hours I spent, but it was plenty. And what contraption to reassemble, it's no wonder they changed the design. I just put my whole collection (well most of it) in the local fair. Image Image

Nice job on the model 1 Bob! What did you do for the cooked burner? Have you found that it's almost impossible to fold the thing up without scratching along the hinges? Very nice display of vintage camping equipment, I'd bet there was a lot of interest, and people saying "hey, we used to have one of those!". Doug

Thanks Guys, yes Doug everything you do to that machine chips off paint, and of course I used grey primer YIKES. I wrap the tank in a cloth before I swing it in and put paper between the doors. OMG....it's just a stove!!! My stuff is at the fair for 3 more weeks a long time to be away from my babies.
